Guest guest
Hi , You should only be doing exercises on the tight side. The other side is already stretched enough, stretching it more will not help the tight side. Be sure to do the exercises as often as possible, usually at each diaper change - more is better. Keep us posted. mom to Jake 13mo. DOC band grad 4/03 and Tyler 3 yrs. > I am wondering for those of you who do excercises for your little > ones necks. In a regular tort pt program they will have you work on both sides. It does a baby no good to have a stretched scm on one side while the other side remains weak - the overstretched side has to be able to help hold that neck mid-line. I wanted to second 's post. It's important to treat tort with a "whole body" approach- the SCM is very responsible for balance, and many tort kids will tighten up that entire side of the body to compensate for that lack of control they have or feel with that tight neck muscle- just as this posture has helped create the tight muscle, its also creating a weak opposite muscle by it never being used correctly. Once you have gotten enough slack on that tort muscle, you should also incorporate righting exercises (you can do this with tilting the child, while sitting on your lap facing the tv, towards the tort side- the body has a natural tendency to "right" the head, so the child will pull back away from the tort side, and this strengthens that non-tort muscle when pulling back midline). I would also incorporate massage to both sides of the body, including arms and legs, to relax the child from being so "tensed" up. Good luck! Guest guest
Jodie, My own daughter did not have tort, but I wanted to post and see if you have read the document created for tort stretching and strengthening exercises... it's here at the group site in the files/torticollis folder. It seems to be a lot more detailed then just the stretch that your PT gave you. I hope it helps somewhat!
