Guest guest
- I have extended health coverage with Blue Cross which covers a private room when in hospital -- but only if a private room is available. When I had my TC surgery I was in a double room at first as there were no privates available, and the fellow next to me had a lot of visitors and I was feeling so sick -- it was really difficult. But I was really in bad shape because I react so negatively to the anesthetic and morphine (my NS thought it was because of opening up the dura but I had the exact same problem after my recent spinal fusion and we've figured out it's the meds that are the problem for me). So, yes, it can be very difficult sharing a room. I did get switched to a private on day two I think, or day three, and that was SO much better. But I don't really know how the system works for you in the U.S. so have no suggestions for you on how to get it covered. My extended health covers it regardless of what you are in hospital for. Hopefully someone else will chime in. Also, hopefully you will only have to lay flat for 24 hrs -- that is usually the case (although I was in bad shape so was down for 3). I can't imagine lying flat for 3 days and people running around visiting their relative next to me etc. The hospital is asking $170 a night for private. My husband also wants to sleep/stay in hospital with me. Have you had to fight to get this covered?? Thanks!
Guest guest
Thanks Dee, I'm going to go online and check my policy. Dr. Frim told me 3 days flat 100% to reduce chance of spinal fluid leak. > > - I have extended health coverage with Blue Cross which covers a private room when in hospital -- but only if a private room is available. Guest guest
I forgot about this..I guess even though my girl is now 20, we were able to have a pediatric surgeon and stay on the peds floors for each surgery and they are all privates so that there is room for the parents! Guest guest
The hospitals I have had surgery at are all private rooms on the neuro floors. Well, Piedmont only has private rooms now. Emory may have doubles on some of the other floors, but neuro is all singles. I did try to do my recovery in the Rollins Pavillion when I was going in for my second untethering (second untethering, but first done with this surgeon at Emory). It is pretty pricey and not covered by insurance. But I had such a miserable time with my first surgery (even with a private room) that I wanted to do my recovery there. But, they said the Rollins Pavillion would not have the resources to handle the care I would need. I still find that hard to believe. Seriously, If Pres. needed major back surgery, I think they would find the resources for him to recover in the Rollins Pavillion once he was stable and out of ICU or any critical care floor. Whatever. It all worked out and I had a much better experience than at Piedmont. But I think that had less to do with the nursing staff and more to do with my MD.
