Me: " finish your spaghetti first. "

M: " spaghetti first. "

E: " cake? "

M: " spaghetti. "

E: " Can I have some cake? "

M: " after you eat your spaghetti. "

E: " Can I have some cake? "

M: " no. "

E: " Can I have some cake? "

M: " No. "

E: " Can I have some cake? "

M: " NO. "

E: " Can I have some cake...PLEASE? "

M: " No. "

E: " But please is the magic word to get what you want!!!! "

M: " Not when you haven't eaten dinner. That's a rule. "

E: " Can I have some cake? "

M: " no. "

E: " Can I have some cake? "

M: " no. "

(at this point, I push my empty plate away.)

E: " are you done spaghetti? "

M: " yes. "

E: " NOW can I have some cake? "

M: " no. finish yours. "

(silence, then he pushes his full plate to me.)

E: " I done -- you just can still see it. Can I have some cake? "
