Hi :

I have had a CPAP machine for almost a year. All I had done was the

overnight sat monitoring but it showed plenty. There were enough

variations that they were able to determine I was coming near wakening

about once a minute, was desaturating (my O2 sats went as low as 85,

they were never that low with my asthma attacks) and my pulse was all

over the place.

I had theorized for awhilethat part of my airway was collapsing. I got

he name of a US doc from someone on the list here and spoke with him for

about half an hour. He said there were several problems he has seen in

EDS: the pharynx collapses, particularly as the person gets to about

stage 3 then the distress from this happening either wakes the person or

brings them back to stage 1, so they never get any REm sleep. He also

said he thought the muscular support around the airways was insufficient

from the EDS and finally that the diaphragm is weak. My physio was able

to check the diaphragm and surprise surpriose, mine is very weak.

They didnt do the full sleep study because the doc didnt want me off

all my meds (like the narcotics, the carnitor, etc) for 2 weeks and

given my sleep problems, she thought I might not even get to sleep when

I went for the test. I was diagnosed with a mixed sleep disorder, which

is the most difficult to treat asthere are so many factors contributing

and it isnt just one problem - i have problems getting to sleep, staying

asleep, waking and not getting back to sleep then sometimes excessive

sleep

Hope this helps

Hugs,

Joyce
