Teen Convicted of Murder Transferred to Adult Prison

http://www.wltx.com/news/story.aspx?storyid=42941

(Columbia) - The South Carolina teenager who killed his

grandparents

has been moved to an adult prison in Columbia.

Pittman's appeals to halt the transfer from a juvenile

facility were rejected by the state Supreme Court and Governor Mark

Sanford this week.

Pittman is now 17. He was 12 years old when he shot his

grandparents

while they slept and set fire to their Chester County home in 2001.

His attorneys argued the slayings were influenced by the

antidepressant Zoloft, but a jury disagreed and sentenced him to 30

years in prison in February 2005.

Pittman's father says he is afraid for the teen's life in an adult

prison. Joe Pittman says his son has told him he would either have

to join a gang for protection or try to make it on his own.

Pittman was transferred to the South Carolina

Department

of Corrections (SCDC) today. He was processed at the Kirkland

Correctional Institution Reception & Evaluation Center in Columbia,

South Carolina and awaits further assignment after the completion

of the assessment.
