Guest guest
Hi Val: I emailed my cousin-the-long-distance-trucker and asked him for internet advice for you. His response is below. I hope this helps. Sharon Hi Cuz, I connect using a wifi wireless service available at some truck stops. The TA, and Flying J truck stops offer it and the Flying J wifi is also available at other truck stops, and is the better connection. I have accessed the Flying J connection even at the TA truck stops. Some truck stops, like Bossleman's in IA and NE, offer free wifi. Flying J is $24.95 mo. if paid on a month by month basis, or $21.95 if you sign up for a year. TA is lower, it is $19.95 mo and truckers can use their TA points to pay for it. Some motels offer free wifi and if they can park near enough they can access it also. Equipment needed is a PCI 802.11G (or higher) card that slides into the card slot on a laptop. Some laptops, like my new one, has a build in wifi card. It is so much easier to use also. She can also connect using a cell phone with a USB connection to the laptop, she would need to contact her cell provider for the correct one. Also, cell providers offer an 'air card' that also slides into the laptop slots and is connected like a dial up connection. This service is expensive, in my opinion, at about $90 per month. Wifi is not a stable connection, I keep loosing the signal and in a two hour session have been logged off many times then logged back on. It can be aggravating , but is by far the best way to go. One more bit of info, at some TA's the connection is better in the truck than it is inside the building. She will just have to test them and find out which is better. Flying J connections are equally as good inside and outside. Also, I have logged on free at some locations simply by checking to see what wifi services are available there and trying them all till I found one that would work. This is actually 'stealing' the signal form someone who pays for it. LOL. But is is their own fault for not securing their wifi signal and blocking other users. And though it is called stealing, it is not illegal. The cards can be purchased at truck stops, but will be less expensive at CompUSA, Fry's, Best Buy, ect. I hope this helps her. If she has any questions I will try to answer them. For expert advice tell her to visit www.komando.com and search for wifi. Kim is great at this computer stuff (and she lives in Phoenix too!).
