Guest guest
, I have the same problem. I had a test done and it was fine. I found out I only do it when stressed or tight from not feeling well. I can swallow fine if I'm relaxed. I have to be sitting up straight too. If I'm not feeling well I might be leaning back a bit in the recliner or bed when I take a drink. I can't do that. Guest guest
Dear , I have had some trouble with chocking but not often and not as bad as yours seems to be. But as reading about not being able to get to the water fountain I thought about a couple of my sisters who do not leave home without a couple of bottles of water with them. Maybe this would be a good idea for you. Please talk to your doctor about this problem. HAPPINESS and BUTTERFLIES Lynn Weird Symptom? Guest guest
The funny thing is, that normally I DO have a bottle of water with me all the time. My PCP actually commented on it at an earlier appt. in a joking manner. The choking thing is not the reason that I always (almost) carry water, it's because a lot of my meds cause dry mouth, and water is the ONLY thing that helps that, but it obviously came in handy when THIS happens, too. ~ Weird Symptom? To: MSersLife > I know that MS does LOTS of WEIRD stuff to our bodies, and > causes > all sorts of quirks and jerks, but I have one specific problem > that > I THINK I read somewhere could be MS related. Guest guest
This is what a swallow study is: Videofluoroscopy of Swallowing, 3 Phase What is a Videofluorscopy of Swallowing, 3 Phase? Why would I need this procedure? What can I expect the day of the test? What happens after the test is completed? What is a Videofluorscopy of Swallowing, 3 Phase? A swallow study is useful in evaluating how food moves from the mouth to the esophagus. A physician requests this study to evaluate specific swallowing problems. Why would I need this procedure? These problems may include a sensation of food sticking in the throat after eating, choking on liquids or solids, or food collecting in the mouth, sometimes resulting in an inability to swallow. The 3-phase swallow study may be completed following surgery or illness. It is useful in providing information on when to resume eating, the easiest and safest foods to eat, and in identifying treatment techniques that will improve safety during eating. This test may be repeated to evaluate progress and to guide changes in treatment plans and food choices. What can I expect the day of the test? A 3-phase swallowing study is not difficult or painful. The test is completed in the Department of Radiology by a speech-language pathologist and radiologist. You will be given thin and thick liquid barium by spoon or cup, followed by small amounts of barium-coated food, which may include pudding, apple sauce, fruit cocktail and/or cookie. You may be asked to bring samples of foods that have been difficult to swallow at home. A video recording of swallowing will be made as you eat and drink tested items. During the evaluation, the speech-language pathologist may ask you to change your posture or to use specific swallowing techniques to determine if they will improve your swallow. The test is generally completed in less than 20 minutes. What happens after the test is completed? The speech-language pathologist and the radiologist will review the video tape once the study is completed. A diagnosis is made and the results, with recommendations, will either be discussed with you that day, or, at times, the physician requests the test report to discuss with you and your family during a follow-up appointment. Guest guest
They gave me some kind of thick shake, Barium I think, it was really REALLY disgusting!!! It was all I could do to swallow it and not gag...I did gag on the last swallow...it was just SO nasty, I am glad, though, that my swallower is A-Ok!! I *do* have trouble swallowing pills (and I take SO many!!) and bread is sometimes hard to swallow and I have to drink something with it. Just a nother something we have to deal with I guess...
