Guest guest
I have been reading some of the past posts and wondering if I am doing the right thing. I took my 11 year old son to the doctor after having intermittant episodes of brownish urine for about 2 weeks. One evening his urine was almost complete blood so I figured this must be serious. After a urine test and ultrasound were done he was found to have no laceration or contusion as we originally thought (being an extremely active, daredevilsh boy) and also found to have been born with only one kidney. We were then referred to a Pediatric Nephrologist who ran tests for calcium, protein, blood and a few others as well. All came back negative but he said that there was no conclusive test for IgA Nephropathy other than a kidney biopsy which he would rather not do at this point unless he shows signs of protein or blood in the urine in coming months since it would have to be done under a general anesthesia and surgically due to the fact that he has only the one kidney and would have less chance to injure or lacerate it. He suggested that for now our son be on a low protein, low sodium diet and be followed every four months for a blood pressure check and urinalysis. He also suggested omitting all contact sports. Although this has been a difficult life adjustment for my son I am proud of his committment to the new diet but am having a difficult time keeping him from his favorite activities which all include a chance for injury. If any of you have suggestions regarding which way for me to turn I would greatly appreciate it. Although he has not been officially diagnosed with this it seems to be something that the doctor is keeping in mind. Thank you in advance for any advice.
