Guest guest
All I know is that I sucked my thumb until about 6 and my teeth are fine. My cousin sucked her thumb for 21 years!!!! I am NOT joking!! She is now 23 and doesn't anymore (or so she says) but she did at night to fall asleep and when she was upset. She has fine teeth! No overbite etc.. I am not an expert, but just BTDT. My DD is still nursing at almost 4. She nurses 2x a day and has beautiful teeth. Guest guest
Any family history? Mom, Dad, Grandparents, etc that have this same overbite? I am gald that she no longer sucks while she is sleeping. She will fall asleep nursing or sucking but then she takes it out. Thanks for the input! Guest guest
Wow! I thought I sucked my thumb for a long time. I don't think she has a thumb in her mouth anywhere near the time that some bottle fed babies need the pacifier. But she does like it! Oh yeah, the dentist said that of course the breast was great since it is soft tissue it does not cause any problems with the development of the jawbone and teeth. Just bottles, thumbs etc. I think I am going to go with my gut on this. And if she wants to suck on her thumb when she doesn't want to eat, or is scared, I am going to let her. I am not going to put her through all those weird ways of getting kids to stop sucking. My parents tried everything too! And of course I just quit on my own way day. (years after they had finally given up) Thanks for everyone's opinions and stories!! Guest guest
mel, couldn't yours and your brothers overbites be genetic and have absolutely nothing to do with thumbsucking? i just believe that the idea that thumbsucking or pacifiers leads to dental problems. on my sons very first visit to the dentist, the dentist told me we would probably be looking at braces in my sons future, as his front teeth are kinda large--can you imagine, he can tell this at the age of 4? my husbands 2 front teeth are a little bit on the large side--compared to the others, but they look just fine and he has beautiful teeth, as does his whole family. brigit
Guest guest
Kim, I agree. I think trying to make her stop is more detrimental than letting her suck it until she is ready to stop on her own. Hopefully she won't be 21! Guest guest
I'm not so certain I agree with this, at least some of the time. My brother sucked his thumb night and day until he was about 9 years old, and he has horrible front teeth, they stick way out and he has an overbite or whatever you call it. I also sucked my thumb a lot, but until about 6 years old, and I have a huge overbite. (not sure if that is the correct term I using but my top teeth clamp down way forward of my bottom ones.) Mel Hi Kim, I can't remember where I read this but it stuck: Babies/children who suck their thumbs are not likely to have buck teeth. In fact, children who never sucked their thumbs are more than twice as likely to have buck teeth. The myth of buck teeth is just an "old wives' tale" thing that just keeps getting passed along. Ruth, Grandma of 3 But my real question is...about thumbsucking.I got the typical lecture about how she is going to have bad teeth because of her thumbsucking. I sucked my thumb for a long time and my teeth are fine. Some of the resources say as long as they quit before their adult teeth come in. Does anybody know of any real research on this subject? She still breastfeeds on demand, and I think that will strengthen her jaw, but sometimes she just prefers her thumb. Thanks!KimMOm to sAmi (11 mo)________________________________________________________________________
Guest guest
I sucked my thumb 'til I was seven. I had buck teeth but the dentist and orthodontist were both adamant that it had nothing to do with thumb-sucking and everything to do with the fact that I inherited the big teeth that fit beautifully in my mom's mouth and my father's smallish (on the inside) mouth. They pulled out four permanent teeth, one from the roof of my mouth just inside the tooth line where it grew when there was just no room, and when my wisdom teeth tried to come in they pulled those, too, though I had awful headaches for about three years before my chiropractor finally figured out what was going on, but I was lazy about banding and retainers and headgear and still in less than three years I had a Class 1-A (or whatever, ya get the picture :->) bite. Still do, I guess, but I have to say I think it did somethin' funky to my smile which was suited to buckteeth but is somehow distorted by straight ones... :-> Not that I'm complaining. She'll Be fine... :-> Thumbs are wonderful because each one seems to Be perfectly suited to it's little one's mouth. :-> I wonder if the differences between thumb-sucking and pacifier-sucking have ever Been studied as correlating with nipple confusion and whatnot... Hmm... Be... Peace.................................. :->

Guest guest
Personally, I think our problems have more to do with pacifiers than thumbsucking, but am unsure. both of us had one a lot of the time from what I know. Guest guest
I sucked my thumb until I was 6 or 7. I slept on my hands to try to break myself of the habit. My overbite was so bad that when I was five I couldn't close my mouth. My older siblings had large front teeth, but they didn't protrude like mine. Mine were fixed with braces years later. Luckily, my sons aren't thumbsuckers/ in Toronto
Guest guest
But don't most babies suck their thumb at some point while they're in the womb? I don't actually know anything about it, was just sort of wondering aloud... which of course is part of what's bothering Mr. Krasner and who knows how many other people here so I should probably stop doing so anyway. Thanks for your thoughts, though! I'm afraid I'm not a good compartmentaliser so issues from some areas of my life seem always to Be messily overlapping with issues from other areas... :-> Have a great day, (and everybody)! Be... Peace............................. :-> Re: thumbsucking I've never heard about thumb-sucking as being a problem where nipple confusion is concerned. I think perhaps most babies don't really find their thumbs until the sensitive period for nipple confusion is passed? Those are my observations and recollections from everything I've read. Guest guest
I've thought about that myself, because, yes, at about 4 1/2 months the fetus may starting sucking her thumb. But strangely enough I've never actually seen a baby less than a few months old suck her thumb. Maybe babies just know not to until they get breastfeeding down pat. Babies are very wise creatures. Guest guest
Just a quick question, how many of your children are thumbsuckers? Devin sucks his right thumb and developed a flat spot on the right side. Wanted to know if there was any correlation. Guest guest
Hi Lori, My Sara had left-sided tort and consequently, RIGHT-sided plagio. Oddly enough, about the time we attempted repositioning, she started sucking her LEFT thumb. Unfortunately, it didn't help with repositioning, and in our case there was no direct correlation with the plagio. Guest guest
Braeden is a left thumbsucker & has plagio on the left. Spencer was never a thumbsucker, but has plagio on the left. I think being crammed in the uterus played a factor. They also both had tort. But I'm sure the thumbsucking didn't help matters!! Guest guest
I know what you are going through! My daughter Makenna, current FRONT PAGE STAR , sucked her right thumb since birth and developed her flat spot on her right side too. I think it was her thumb sucking that kept her constantly on her right side (she doesn't have Tort). That thing is always in her mouth when she is laying down. So much so that her little front right tooth stick out a little farther..... I wish I could break her of it. Any suggestions? , momma to Makenna. Guest guest
Lori, sucked her left thumb and had flattening on her left side. Guest guest
Hi Lori Ethan sucks two fingers on his left hand, and yup, you guessed it, he has plagio on the left side. But, we noticed the plagio much earlier than he started sucking his fingers, so when we were repositioning, it was very difficult b/c he sucked his fingers on his left hand (he still sucks them at 15 months, but much less than he used to!) , mom to Ethan Vancouver, BC --- In Plagiocephaly , " KiddyKat13 " <kiddykat13@y...> wrote: > Just a quick question, how many of your children are thumbsuckers? > Devin sucks his right thumb and developed a flat spot on the right > side. Guest guest
sucks his left thumb and there is flatness on his left side. But I think the Plagio developed first because of his tort, and it just became natural for him to select his left thumb.
