Guest guest
As per usual, this advice needs to be taken to you own doctor before you try it. Advice like this is great, but could be dangerous given the wide range of people in the group. Guest guest
Sound advice , thank you for pointing this out to the group. I had similar advice from my team, but chocolate was never mentioned, will have to ask about that one. I think everything in moderation is ok really, my Neph does not have a problem with me eating normally, basically because my status is reasonably good kidney wise, but he has advised no caffeine. I certainly would not advise stepping into a regime below, without the consultation of my medical care team. Guest guest
Chocolate is mentioned in the renal diet for people with advanced renal failure because it is high both in potassium and in phosphorus (too much phosphorus in the blood is what causes calcium to be pulled out of the blood - this is because calcium binds with phosphorus so easily). Phosphorus doesn't harm the kidney tissues themselves, nor does potassium. Potassium only has one minor bad effect: too much of it and your heart stops - permanently. But none of you with mild IgAN need to be concerned about those things at this point. I've never heard that coffee is harmful for kidney tissue. The only thing I've been told by the experts is that if the person's diet is restricted for potassium - best to limit to one, maybe two cups of coffee. Coffee does contain a bit of potassium, so more than a cup and it all adds up. Believe it or not, potassium restriction is not an absolute. People like me, who take furosemide, can easily lack potassium and have to add a bit in their diet. No doctor or dietician I've ever seen has said anything about the colour of meat. As long as you don't overdo it (stick to the protein guidelines), they're happy. Pain pills. I'm sure you will all find that kidney patients are prescribed painkillers just like anyone else, every now and again when it's needed. They say that with most, occasional use shouldn't be a problem. The problem is more likely to occur with non-prescription pain killers simply because they are so readily available. As it's been said many times before, best to stick with acetominophen when you have kidney disease (but even that shouldn't be taken continuously or for prolonged periods). Guest guest
I certainly have to agree with you on that one, . To me, some of that advice seemed a bit extreme, to be totally honest (no offence meant). " Malt (igan) " wrote: Sound advice , thank you for pointing this out to the group. Guest guest
The only deal I know of about caffeine is the potential for increasing blood pressure, and the fact that coffee has some potassium in it (only relevant if you need to restrict potassium, not to mention the phosphorus in the milk or cream). This is one of those things where much is said based on belief and preferences, even among doctors. With high blood pressure being a frequent problem among IgAN patients, avoiding high-caffeine products may help, so it's probably not a bad idea to switch to decaf. Guest guest
Well, I don't, 'cos I don't drink much in the way of coffee, tea, or cola, but my mum goes through coffee like it's going out of style, so I know that she gets the headaches if it's longer than usual since she had a cup of coffee.
