Guest guest
Hello everyone! Benny had a checkup yesterday and the pediatrician feels that he has moderate plagio. He says that he only believes in banding when the facial features have been deformed and that Benny has no signs of that. He feels that he will continue improving through my repo efforts and that we should wait until six months to make a decision about banding. He stated that he is confident that, due to the fact that I am so concerned and so intent on repoing, that I will see that by six months there will be no need to band or see specialist. I am tempted to go behind his back and see specialist anyway but I am inclined to trust his judgment since he will be chief of pediatrics at a respected children's hospital in January. He told me that a baby's skull does not stop growing until 15 months so setting the six month benchmark is good. I would like to know what Remy's mom thinks about this because she is the repo expert. Do you think that I should take his advice and continue repoing until the baby is six months old and make a decision about banding at that time. I have been seeing improvement with the repoing and that would give me two and a half months to see if the repo does the trick. Maybe I will make the appt with the craniofacial specialist now so that by the time the deadline arrives I will have an appt set up and can move forward easily. It is reassuring to me that the pediatrician sees no signs of one side of his face being pushed up or his ears being misaligned. Many comments would be appreciated. Guest guest
- I have to be honest here after having 2 kids go through it now. Get the second opnion from an expert. I say that because has only had to wear the band for 8 weeks b/e we caught it early and despite my best efforts both times, repo did not help much. This is my own personal experience and repo may work for you, but it just seems that it can't hurt to get another professional opinion when you are fighting time. I do have a friend who had brachy and was told the same thing by their pediatrician. They are kicking themeselves now as he is turning a year old and there has been little improvement. I guess it depends on how severe the plagio is for that to be effective??? People at Cranial Tech told me that very often it does not round out on its own - they have lots of older babies coming in (6-8 months plus) who are coming for treatment. Hope that can help any - ultimately, go with what will settle your mind best. If you need the other opinion just do it - knowledge can't hurt and if you are OK trying repo for awhile then that is fine too! Just had to share my opinion!! Caroline > Hello everyone! Guest guest
, Your pediatrician sounds nice and has excellent credentials, but I get the impression that he is not exactly pro-banding. If he does not believe in banding unless there is facial asymmetry, and currently Benny has no facial asymmetry, then it follows that your pediatrician wouldn't recommend banding your son even though he assesses his plagio as " moderate. " It's as if your pediatrician wouldn't recommend banding even if you received no further improvement, since there is no facial asymmetry. In my opinion, " moderate " plagio, even with no facial asymmetry, would certainly warrant the band if and when repo didn't work out. I am very happy that repo has been working for you, and since you are seeing results, I would support your decision to set your deadline at 6 months, before which you would be taking all the steps needed to get ready to band. In our case, we saw significant improvement through repo from 5 to 7 months. We set a deadline of 8 months (which was 3 total months trying agressive repo.) By that time, we had gone through all of the appointments, etc, and were going for casting the next day (we ended up cancelling since repo worked for us.) Please don't feel you are " going behind the back " of your pediatrician if you make the appointment with the craniofacial specialist... you are most definitely being proactive in the care and treatment of your son. Even if your pediatrician does not follow the AAP plagio guidelines, at the very least you should feel confident in doing so; the AAP clearly states that if, after a 2-3 month agressive repo effort, results have stalled or if desired results haven't been achieved, a referral to a specialist is appropriate. Please keep us updated on Benny's treatment and take care, Christie --- --- In Plagiocephaly , " " <icynena@y...> wrote: > Hello everyone! Guest guest
I agree with the other moms...get a second opinion. Jordyn is moderate brachy with no facial asymmetry, and we've made the decision to band her. She is currently 4 1/2 months and repoing for 2 months didn't help with us. CT, or whoever you go to, won't recommend that you band him unless they think it is necessary. And it can take a while to get into the specialist, so what's the harm in making an appt now? At least you'll be prepared and already have a time slot if you decide you want to seek a second opinion. > Hello everyone!
