At good old google.com, I found many links to info on mycoprotein, and I

thought this one was particularly good about suggesting possible difficulties

with the stuff.

I guess it's been on the market for a while and some people are finding

it useful, but it is a rather drastic leap into a hitherto unexploited food

resource (non-mushroom fungi), and as such, it's definitely worth taking a

second look before you leap. It's funny that in Europe there was a hugely

adverse response to the idea of " enfoods " being foisted upon the public,

yet an engineered substance like this, is finding acceptance.

Some people are highly allergic to molds and fungi, so if quorn were

consumed by such a person, I assume they would suffer a reaction. Such

allergies are common enough.

I have eaten Quorn for many years and have had no problems with it at

all. I really love it in stir frys etc, a healthy option for me anyway.

Quorn

In Europe they have a fungus sold as meat substitute. It is called

Quorn.

Does anyone know:

1) Is this good for a " low-Protein diet "

2) Where you can get it in the U.S.A.

3) Are the supposed problems with it real or hysteria over strange

food? (reports of Vommiting, indigestion).

They discribe it as " Mycoprotein " . Do you know if that count as

regular protein for people on the Low-protein diet?

The " health " problems people seem to be describing seem to be

hysterical type things that are more psychological than biological.

Quote from CNN (via Reuters)

" The Center for Science in the Public Interest said it had received

reports from 33 people who had suffered vomiting, diarrhea and other

ailments after eating Quorn. A North Carolina man broke out in hives

and had trouble breathing, the group said.

Quorn is the trade name for mycoprotein, which is used as a

substitute for ground beef and chicken, and in lasagna and fettuccine

Alfredo. "

Apart from my five year old daughter, the rest of us are all vegetarians - in

fact I have been one since the age of 4 years old (my dad had butcher shops).

I don't eat Quorn as I don't like anything that resembles meat in taste or

texture, but the rest of the family live on the stuff. The kids prefer quorn

nuggets to chicken nuggets and think the burgers are just as good. Several

friends who are meat eaters actually prefer the quorn spagetti bolognaise to

meat bolognaise, stating it is not as fatty.

There have certainly been no side affects and I have always assumed that it

is healthy food.

P.S. I do not work for, or have shares or monetary interest in the Quorn

Company!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad you found my P.S. funny. I'm always worried that people might take

what I write too seriously as I've always had a slightly warped sense of

humour - so my husband tells me.

I'm due at the hospital in a couple of hours for my six monthly appointment.

I've never been interested in my figures before, but thought I would ask

about them today. What are the important ones to ask for? I'm worried that

if I just ask for my figures, the consultant might answer 36-24-36, or in my

case much larger since having kids ( well in the case of the middle figure

especially).

Not sure whether other parts of the world are sleeping, getting up or other!

Anyone else is welcome to answer this for me, as long as it is in the next

hour or so - I don't expect much do I?

Tee hee Frances, I like the PS, very funny, well to me anyway.

I agree with your friends, the quorn spaghetti is simply lovely, so when

I feel like a treat that is what I have, don't feel like I am missing

out then. Up until 18 months ago I only ate meat rarely, fish mostly,

but my Neph asked me to reintroduce small amounts of meat back into my

diet, this I have done, although begrudgingly, I don't like the texture

of meat and I find it very hard to digest.

That said, I do love a bacon sandwich on a Sunday morning, yummy. Fish

is my absolute favourite and I eat a lot of it.

PS. I am not the daughter of a butcher, nor a fisherman! Tee hee

Pierre,

Marmite is our thing - as the adverts say, you either LOVE it or HATE it.

Pizzas are brilliant if you spread marmite over the base before adding the

tomato puree etc.

By the way, wish the figures were mine - we can all dream!

Rita, thanks for also adding the important bits to ask my consultant.

Thanks

Frances

What to ask for:

serum creatinine is the main one, but it's useful to know what it was before

also.

creatinine clearance and proteinuria, but they can only tell you that if

you've done a 24 hour urine collection.

Pierre

P.S. 36-24-36 would be a pretty good figure : )

Hi Frances,

I guess you are from the UK? As I live in Canary Islands we have

same time. Well, you can ask your neph:

1) Your serum creatinine

2) your creatinine clearance

3) proteinuria in grms in your 24 h urine

4) your BP

5) your cholesterol level

6) your hematocrito if you tend to be anemic

These are the most important for mild IGAN. But of course if you are

more advanced you also need to ask for BUN, uric acid, sodium,

potassium, phosphate.

Good luck with the visit to your neph.

morning? I guess that the time difference between Europe and Canada

must be 6 or 7 hours, is that right? Here it is 1:10 pm.

Have a nice day.

Hi Rita,

I noticed our replies appeared at exactly the same time. Yours was better

anyway : )

It's 8:30 in the morning here - not that early. Another 30+ degree day. I

always check the morning email before I take the dog out for his walk.

Nah not Vegemite here, its Marmite, I love this, but sadly have to limit

it. Marmite is stronger than Vegemite but that is equally as good in a

emergency, i.e. need quick fix!

Oohhh Pierre you haven't lived !!! Right from a small child we used to

get boiled eggs and marmite soldiers, delicious. I still love the

combination to this day, although only have about 1 egg in a blue moon.

Aahhh those were the days.

Vegemite, yes. It reminds me of a music video from the '80s. " ...she just smiled

and made me a vegemite sandwich. I come from the land downunder... "

I would also pass on that. I think that there are about a dozen

Australians out there who watched me have my first bite of vegemite

and got a BIG kick out of the horror on my face. I was teased about

it for a year too!
