Anyone else here grow up on a farm? I have some really disturbing

memories of my dad beating up on the animals. I realize that to

raise animals they have to see you as the dominant figure, but even

my husband was taken aback when my dad pulled out a 2x4 and whacked a

pig over the head with it. My dad would also kick and hit our dogs

and then have them put down because they wouldn't " behave " .

My point is they treat these animals so flippantly, like they're so

much garbage that they have to deal with. I think they view children

in a similar way: just something they have to deal with, rather than

someone who might have a voice.

parents do.  Her need for unconditional love is totally at the

expense of the pet and it just devastates me.  She has a bichon frise

which is about a 20lb dog.  He has never been out of her house except

twice when he had to go to the vets for emergency antibiotics.  He

pees and poops on newspaper in her basement and has never had any

training.  He is terrified of people and neurotic when Nada is not

around.  Oh ya, he is 3 years old.  He has never been socialized with

other dogs or people nor has he been neutered.

had to work extra long shifts so she left the back door to her house

open to the small fenced yard so the dog could go in and out.  Well

the dog dug out under the fence and took off.  A neighbor brought the

dog back to her this morning letting her know he had escaped.  She

was really upset and her comment in her email was - " I don't know

what I am going to do with him!  I guess I will have to walk him or

something.  Obviously now that I am working he needs company so I

better get him another dog. "

for a pure bred rescue (not bichon's!!!) and I am ashamed at the way

she treats her pets.  Never in zillion years would I ever approve her

for a dog.

hahahaha! my nada had a bichon, too! she was completely inappropriate with him

as well. she cooked for him everyday, made him terribly overweight to where he

couldn't jump anymore so she had a ramp built for him to allow him to get on her

bed. she also had portraits taken of him every year, dressed up in tuxedos and

what have you (let's take into account that my nada NEVER ordered school pics of

me & refused to buy my senior portrait). it got to the point that he had cancer

and she had put him on chemo for a year.....i've never seen a more miserable dog

in my life. he was just a lump that could do nothing. she babied him, spoon fed

him, put him in diapers, etc. when he finally died she went completely psychotic

& of course screamed at me for not being there when he needed to be rushed to

the vet (his death was my fault, i guess. CANCER didn't have anything to do with

it?)

i had to jump on this one because i'm so closely linked with this topic....

thanks for the laughs!

This is Nada's second Bichon.  The first sounds much like your Nada's.  He was

fed to the point he was round and could barely walk.  He lived to be 13 and his

last few months (by her accounts) were horrible.  He was incontinent and blind

so she kept him in a baby playpen.  He could no longer walk either.  She let him

suffer for months before he finally stopped eating and passed away.  I hate to

say this ( I am horrified ) but that was over a year ago and I believe he is

still in her freezer.

There are somethings I just don't want to know.  She does make me feel sick to

my stomach.  All I can do is stay away and keep little to no contact.  I am just

so thankful she is not a collector, I suppose that would be worse.

I never thought about it until this post... I grew up with animals all

of my life. I had a cocker spaniel from the age of 2. He lived to be

15, I came home one day and he was gone. I asked my mom where he went

and she said, " Oh I had him put to sleep today. " Like it was no big

deal... I never even got to say good-bye. We had a kitten that was

given away. Another dog and cat was put to sleep just because she was

tired of dealing with them. The dog was only 6, I was out of the house

by then and didn't find out until it was over. The cat was old, but

still had more life in him, she had the nerve to get upset with the vet

for making her " feel bad " for putting him to sleep. I wouldn't be

surprised if the vet didn't put him to sleep. She always went and did

these things on her own on a whim. I never found out until after it had

been done. I never got to say good-bye to any of them.

It's odd because I never even connected the parade of pets to the need

to be unconditionally loved, which could almost go without saying, I

don't know how I overlooked.

I know whenever she's unhappy because she buys a pet. They were never

around for too long growing up, because the responsibility would get

to be too much. Cats, rabbits, birds, whatever. I bought a dog for

myself at around 17 and she quickly found one, what appears to be a St

Bernard mutt. They became inseparable, which sucks because I finally

had a dog for myself. Eventually she left the dogs in the care of my Dad.

Because of all this, I don't feel any connection to pets.
