,

I have had swollen ankles and lower legs several times. My neph put me on

lasix for fluid reduction (it also helps keep bp down) and this has helped

tremendously.....my ankles would triple in size and my calves would feel

like my skin was taunt and bruised...the lasix is working for me.

Swelling of the lower legs

All,

This past weekend I sat at home and was unable to do much because my ankles

were very swollen, and it hurt to walk. The pain wasn't like one when you

twist or sprain your ankle. It was a deeper pain.

I have had my ankles and lower legs swell before in the past, but never like

this. Normally I would just kick back with my legs up and within a half

hour, the swelling would be gone (mostly). This time, I could not get it to

go away. I'm running on my 4th day of very swollen ankles, moderately

swollen lower legs and not sure what to think about it.

I'm curious if anyone else has this problem and/or if someone can suggest

some things that will help with the swelling/pain. (I'm not sure if the

pain is a result of the swelling, or vice versa.)

Remember, your thoughts are Golden!

skin rash.

Well, it could be the renal failure. You can have significant edema even if

IgAN is mild - if you have heavy proteinuria.

Or, there's a slight chance it could be the calcium channel blocker

(CCB)component of Lotrel (which is an ACE inhibitor combined with a CCB).

This is a well know side effect of CCBs.

Or, it could be something else completely unrelated to the IgAN or

medications.

If it were me, I would give my doctor a call about it. Your description of

pain seems a little untypical to me, but you never know.

Pierre,

I go to see my Neph this week, so I'll be sure to mention it. It's a bit

funny though (not funny 'ha ha') because literally every time I go to see my

Neph, the swelling is minimal, if not non-existent. It's really not a big

deal normally, but the past few days have made me worry a little.

Anyhow, I'll keep everyone posted. I will get a copy of my last blood/urine

test results when I visit so that I can post it here, and use the calculator

thingy-ma-jig that you posted a link to recently. :)

Good luck. If it turns out to be the drug side effect I mentioned, a

diuretic (lasix) won't be of much use for that. If it's due to the renal

failure, then it would be.

Good luck with your Nephrologist this week, I hope he or she can put

your mind at rest.

Best wishes
