Guest guest
Hi Sharon! Yum!!! I love tomatoes. Fried green tomatoes are my favorite! To tell you the truth, I love just about all vegetables. It was not hard for me to become a vegetarian at one time. It's a little harder now that the price of vegies have gone through the roof, and I don't have a garden. Enjoy your garden and the fruits of your labor! It is truly a blessing. In Christ...Val -- Our Tomatoes! Gardens, blooming... and reflection Our little backyard garden is doing great! We have loads of green tomatoes and one very lovely ripe tomato. We can hardly wait to start harvesting some good tasting tomatoes. We have a cherry tomato vine as well as 5 large tomato vines. I've put pictures in the photos section if anyone want to take a look (and share in my happy thoughts over having growing garden plants The rest of the garden consists of: variety of radishes; three kinds of squash: yellow crookneck, zucchini and green patty-pan, sugar baby watermelons; 3 jalapenos and 3 other pepper plants. I still want to plant some spinach and some leaf lettuce. We also have marigolds, lots of sunflowers and a bed of dianthus. I live in town and have limited gardening space but we are trying to make it pleasant. You know the old saying "Bloom where you are planted"? That's what I'm trying to do. It's a big change from our little 20 acre farm in Northern Arizona and our 40 acres in the backwoods of Alaska. By the way I have decided not to return to Alaska. My heart tells me to stay in Arizona and my goal is to be back in the area where we had our farm (near Challis!) I like to live rural, out in the country, away from hoards of neighbors. Guest guest
Upon further refkection, I remember that my maternal grandmother put me in charge of her chickkens each summer, at her large cabin on Upper Twin Lake in Idaho. Guest guest
Sharon.....I am so ENVIOUS of you, fresh tomatoes and all!!! We are just planting here in Michigan, we use Mother's Day as a "safe" guideline to put our gardens in. How I would love biting into a "real" tomato! (The hothouse ones are so bland). Guest guest
I remember that about Michigan; the Victory Garden was my father's, but was in honor of my mother and the planting usually starteded the Saturday before Mother's Day. The hard part was that we had to import my mother's mother for the canning, of some of the produce and the fruit from the trees! Love to you, Fayth, and all who love gardening! Love, n Our Tomatoes! Guest guest
And I'm not giddy as heck about that news. Nope, not a bit. LMHO I hope you all get to come up when out stuff starts growing. I'll even let you try some vegies. LMHO I agree with Val... Vegies are wonderful! It's so much fun growing your own, too. Last year I learned to make Fried Green Tomatoes for the first time. I found out that not only do we like FGT, I can make gooduns! LOLOL I looked at my Mother's growing tomatoes recently and wondered when she'd pluck and fry the green ones. I think I like those best! LOL We had so many different tommytoes dishes last year. Our Early Girls produced nonstop! We did try one dish, Fisherman's Tomatoes (tomatoes stuffed with a mix of salmon and whatnot)... We will never have that dish again. ROFL Our older daughter, Jenna, had her own [Husky] cherry tomato plant last year and is about to plant one this year. I had one of the plants we called mine, but Jenna's did the best by far. The girls were always out "sneaking" tomatoes off the vine. LOL Apparently, those cherry tomatoes enjoy being planted next to an Artichoke (which blooms so beautifully I rarely eat the Artichokes lol) and near a rose bush. Each of those two plants seem to enjoy the cherry tomatoes, too. ) We've noticed a new tomato plant growing on it's own in that little area. I guess one of the cherry tomatoes which fell to the ground, under the Artichoke, decided to grow by it'self this year. How cool I think that is! ) We usually get quite the crop of squash, while the ravens enjoyed the corn and melons too much last year. <g> Last year we had new neighbors come up while buying the forty acres next to us. They'd camp out in their travel trailer (now they've had the well drilled, well house in and it's huge, holding tank, large travel trailer stationed near it, etc.). Seeing our new neighbors and only having the squash on hand, we packed them a welcoming "basket" of summer squash. LOLOL Welcome to the rural neighborhood! LOL We've now learned the twenty further down the road was purchased and newer neighbors have moved in. That squash better get to growing! LOL Challis ~ No animals yet, only dogs and cats and I only really like the cats. Shhh. LOLOL Sharon Marsden wrote: Our little backyard garden is doing great! Guest guest
Hi Connie, Yup, we always had the mint in our iced tea, too. ) (My Mom's family hails from Georgia, so I guess iced tea is a must -- or "sweet tea" -- lolol). Did you grow your mint in sun, shade, both? I've read sun is best, but Mom's old mint wasn't in the sun at all. <shrug> LOL Challis connie buran wrote: Challis, We Southerners put that mint in our iced tea. My husband is half Syrian and uses mint in some of his recipes. He makes great stuffed grape leaves, tabbouli—bakes amazing pita bread. Mint does take off but I love the smell. Mine sure won't grow so easily! LOL I've heard mints can grow so well that they take over an area, and are like a weed. I want a weed like that! Guest guest
Oh, how I miss having a garden. I could never do in ground ones now, but I liked my container ones I use to have. A few years ago I lived someplace where they had raised gardens. They were so cool! The strawberry patch was a series of tiers, starting with a large raised box, then a second smaller one on top of that one, and so forth, until there were about 5 boxes. Then they had put a water spout right up the middle so watering was easy. They were the best strawberries, and so plentiful. I had fresh ones all summer. Okay Sharon…….send me some Green tomatoes!! ;-) lol….got my mouth all watered for vine grown tomaters…..fried of course! Guest guest
I have enjoyed seeing our plants growing in our little garden. I can't do any of the actual gardening but I can do the "watching" can't I? If I could send you some green tomatoes I would certainly do that. Several years ago I saw some green tomatoes at the grocery and they cost 3 times the price of the ripe ones. LOL Sharon Jackie Hanan wrote: Oh, how I miss having a garden.
