Hi Dave,

I don't have the answers for your questions but am in the same boat with my

son with the same questions. He will be entering his last year of

high school in Sept. and will also be 18 in Sept. As long as he is a full

time student my insurance will cover him until he reaches his 24

birthday.........so as far as college goes, we are not giving him a choice

which he is not happy about because he wants to go to a culinary arts

school..........as far as insurance for him when I can no longer carry him,

well, I am going to try to push him into a " civil service " job (as myself).

I'm sure they would not disqualify him from hiring just because of his IgAN.

I would think that he would still be able to obtain Life Insurance but more

than likely at a higher premium.

All the best to you and your son.

I first was diagnosed at 17. I went thru college and got a job at a large

corporate, where I've been employed for 15 years. I have great health and life

insurance thru the company. Only problem is this, if I get layed-off, I'm SOL. I

can get health insurance thru my wife's employer, but I believe at most

employer's (including mine) before you can add a spouse to life insurance, one

must show " proof of insurability. "

Son's future

One of the things I thought of recently when considering things that

lie ahead for my son Mike, age 17.... ability to obtain life

insurance. Since he has now been officially diagnosed with IGA Neph,

is it impossible for him to obtain a whole life policy. We live in

New York state, if that has any bearing.

Also, what about health insurance. He will graduate high school next

year and definately go on to college so we are ok under my plan for

at least the next 5 years. I work for the State of NY, anyone know if

he can be covered even after colleg since this was a pre-existing

condition.

Thanks for any info

Thanks for the info Marty.. age 17, you and Mike have

something other than IGA in common. Have been folowing

your postings and it sounds like things are going

quite well after your transplant. Keep it up.

By the way, has the Americans with Disabilities Act

had any impact for persons with kidney disease ?

thanks again

Dave

Dave, I have the same concerns. My son, , is 17, and also has

been diagnosed with IgAN a year and a half ago. I worry about what

will happen to his health when he goes off to college. Pam

My son was diagnosed at 13 and is now 22 (transplant last summer). Our

understanding is that in the USA, he needs to be very careful to maintain

continuous health insurance coverage. As long as he does that, he can¹t be

denied due to a pre-existing condition. He¹s currently on my coverage, but

if he doesn¹t have his own coverage when he is no longer eligible for mine,

then we¹ll have to pay for COBRA coverage for 18 mo. or however long it goes

and hope he can get coverage through a job. He has Medicare for secondary

coverage for 2 1/2 years after the transplant, then for 6 mo. only it

becomes his primary coverage. At the transplant center, they emphasized that

he must maintain continuous coverage, even for this 3 years when he also has

Medicare. As far as life insurance, I think he¹ll have to hope to get

coverage through a job and then if he leaves that job, he might be able to

convert the life insurance and pay for it himself. All this does limit the

sort of things he can do, career-wise. Probably starting his own business is

out insurance would be too expensive, although in Colorado where we live,

there is a high-risk insurance pool provided by the state for people who

can¹t get health insurance otherwise. It¹s still fairly expensive though and

is basically just a ³major medical² type policy.

If it's any comfort, I managed to (just barely) finish a BA degree on what

little function I had left at that age. I was diagnosed at 19, although I

knew I'd had problems for two years before that. Just make sure has good

docs on deck.

Hi,

I saw your message about health insurance and life insurance and whether your

son can get it or not. I live in NY state as well. I haven't been able to get

life insurance, but I was able to get health insurance on my own. I actually

started up my own business about 2 weeks after I was diagnosed, and obtained

health insurance for myself and my wife through my company approximately 4

months after I started it. I don't see any reason why your son should be turned

down for health insurance. Life insurance on the other hand seems to be a

different matter.
