My nine year old son has been doing very well since his biopsy a year and a

half ago. No visable blood in the urine, normal blood pressure and his protein

in his urine has went down tremendously. My question is I have noticed the last

couple of days in the morning his eyes are very puffy. Sometimes they will stay

that way for hours, and some days it will go away within 30 min.

I know when we go to the doctor that is one of the first questions he will ask

is, " do you notice puffiness around the eyes, or ankles? " Why is that? and what

does that mean? My answer has always been no, so I have never questioned what

the puffiness might mean.

It had been very hot here (around the 90's) so I don't know if the heat has

something to do with it or maybe it means his blood pressure is up.

Thanks for your help.

I would just like to know with IGA he asked me, jeimym18

About the biopsy, Don't need to fear anything, specially when you

kidney function it's still good. The procedure it's very simple, the

only bad part it's your back might be sore just alittle bit, but

nothing that can't live with. the longer you take, the more risk you

If you have any concerns just ask your doctor.

Hi

Puffiness can be a symptom of nephrotic syndrome (edema). I am puffy around

the eyes in the morning, but by the evening gravity has taken effect and my

ankles are swollen while the face is ok. I also get some pain and stiffness

in my legs and feet due to the swelling.

Is that due to excess water retention, or a side effect from meds?

Could be either. If there is any fluid retention at all, as we lie asleep

during the night, fluids tend to collect in upper areas of the body, around

the lungs, the abdomen, etc. It doesn't take much for the eyes to puff a bit

(which you should mention to the nephrologist next visit if it happens). As

we go about a normal day, as already pointed out, gravity takes over

and the extra fluid tends to collect in the legs, hence swollen ankles and

feet.

Sometimes, blood pressure medications can cause swelling, but it likely

wouldn't just be the eyes. And if it's just in the morning and goes away, I

wouldn't think it's a drug side effect.
