Guest guest
Dear , Sheryn and , First of all, sorry I haven't written before. I was at my sister's for a week while they had to go to Saskatchewan to see my sister's mother-in-law, who is dying of lung cancer. They're still there right now but should be back tomorrow. I was also quite sick last week with those severe earaches I get complicated by feeling quite nauseous. It's still a little touch and go as far as that and I'm trying to get myself built up physically as I'm going for surgery on the 31st - Monday!! I went last week for pre-admission got my usual blood work, physical, ECG, etc. and had to call today for a confirmation of Monday. One thing which is very interesting which I wanted you to know. I saw my family Dr. last week or the week before, and went over my MRI reports with him. On the last one it said " old right hemorrhagic cerebellar infarct " and he told me that meant that I had had a stroke! during surgery no doubt. I've always wondered about this since it was posted about strokes during surgery and since Fusca had said during surgery they couldn't actually tell when you were having one. I'm very surprised that Dr.Broad has never mentioned this. As thetumor was so large maybe he didn't know what were side effects of the tumor and what wasn't? It seems he would have suspected when I even needed a month of speech therapy let alone relearning to crawl and walk, but that was 15 years ago! I don't know if Dr.Broad would admit it. Also I had called Dr.Oldring's office a few times to ask about the surgical approach but she hasn't been able to see him so I still don't know. I do think though that they won't do a Translabyrinth. I have to be at the hospital at 5:30 - 6 am Monday morning. Thankfully, my family in Dallas has been emailing and phoning me a lot with the support and my sister from Grande Prairie is arriving tomorrow. I feel a little nervous but not too much so. I've been in Canada for 3 mths now and am anxious to get back home to my family in Dallas. I am thankful that this is now all getting taken care of. My parents will call you or send an email to the Crew to let everyone know how surgery went. I'll be emailing as soon as possible. Thea, I'm not sure why doctors never mention the strokes either. I submitted a question on strokes to the NF2 Review and hopefully we will get some kind of answer to this question in the next issue. I don't know for sure they can't tell during the operation you are having a stroke but this what my wife who is an OR nurse tells me. They will see some sort of change on the monitoring instruments but will not know for sure what is causing this. Welcome back to Canada and best wishes for your surgery.
