Xanax - not the same as Valium??!@!

Hi...

Yesterday I received my prescription for Valium, .5 mgs per pill. Therefore, this morning I broke one in half and took the same dosage that I have been taking of Xanax, i.e. .25 mgs twice a day.

By noon, I was awash in withdrawal symptoms. I had full blown panic attack, those terrible feelings of " I know I'm going to die " , nausea, sharp abdominal pains, increased sensitivity to light and cold chills.

At 12:30 I took .25 mgs of xanax to see what would happen, and by 1:30 I was feeling like a new person. So this leads me to wonder and to ask: How am I going to switch these two drugs? I know they are pharmacologically different, but did not expect this result.

Has anyone else had the experience of changing from xanax to valium? Any experiences, insight, and advice are most appreciated.
