Our son is in the same boat...he has flattening on the right side (14mm). Since it seems so mild, I've asked the pediatrician and technician at Cranial Tech. if they thought it would go away with repositioning (which we had been doing since he was 8 weeks) and time. Both replied that while it may round some, it would not go away. Check with your pediatrician and perhaps a specialist then you make the decision. We have decided to have our son banded. Good luck! Guest guest
Hi there, Repoing is definitely a hard job with slow progression. My daugter is 6 mos also (born 12/23) and we started repoing at 1 month. We saw mild progress of her severe plagio (20mm), but not enough. She was banded at 4.5 mos. You can see the progress we made with the banding vs. repoing in the Hannah B photo folder. I don't regret banding her at all, but her plagio was severe too. We've seen amazing progress and she's down to a 10mm diff now. We also use a specialist in Boston at Children's Hospital. We've seen Dr. Madsen & Dr. , and they are also with Dr. Guemnerova and Dr. Proctor. I think that the measurements are less important than how you see your daughter. If you didn't get correction from repoing would you be happy with her head like it is now? I was told that measurements can differ up to 5mm depending on who does them and what spot on the head they're using. Did the specialist already write you a prescription? You could always go to a consult and get another set of measurements and another opinion. We talked to people at NOPCO, Hanger, and then ultimately ended up at Cranial Technologies in Connecticut. If you use Children's they will automatically refer you to NOPCO, but you do have the choice to go where you want. If you are going to do it I think it is important to interview many different orthotists and go with who you are most comfortable with. It's not an easy decision to band in the first place, but it helps to interview a few orthos and choose who you think is best. The only problem with repoing is that it takes time to see results, and the younger the baby is the better a helmet would work, so you don't want to wait too long. That's why you really have to think about how bad her head looks to you (all measurements aside) and what you can live with. Also take into account any facial assymetry. Good luck with your decision and your repoing. Let us know what you decide or if you have any more questions. , mom to Hannah DOCbanded 5/12 Cape Cod, Ma --- In Plagiocephaly , " daveg227 " <daveg227@y...> wrote: > We went to a specialist in Boston yesterday, he didn't say it was > required, but he suggests a helmet over 9mm. > >
Guest guest
Hi, I just popped on line to get a few updates on some of the little ones here. My DD, was Dx with Tort and Plagio at 13 weeks. We had great success with repositioning UNTIL she became 5-1/2 months then it stopped correcting. We waited several months thinking we may see more correction but never did. was banded at 10-1/2 months. After we banded he we saw correction starting again within the first week of her banding. IMHO repositioning will not be successful after 6 months of age. Not only are the soft spots not as open but try to get a 6 month old to stay in the position you want them too. I would do the repositioning because any little bit helps but yes go for the band. Also, I would recommend an active band. Something like the DOCband. Yes they are more expensive $3000, But I look at it this way $1400 is no bargen if you aren't seeing enough correction. Also, I have wondered if the children are in the passive bands longer, needing move bands. (as the baby grows the band will need to be replaced, this is what we want growth for correction - but if an active band is putting pressure on the high spots I would have to imagine that correction would be faster)--This is just IMO on the different bands. Think about the helmet like braces for your teeth. Correct it the sooner the better. My son is 7 and just got and expander for his crossbite. They used to wait, but now they know you should do it before the bone fuses.
