weren't around for last big ABI discussion.

Hey all you ABI types,

I've been wondering for some time now what you actually 'hear' with the ABI.

There was an ABI workshop at the San Francisco ALDAcon. Two girls did it who

had ABI's. One of them was HEI's darling at the time. All I recall is that

she was studying to be a lawyer. In any case, I asked them what they heard

with the ABI. All they said was 'well, it's hard to decribe but I love my

ABI'. OK, so you love it but what do you hear??? Do you hear words? If you

closed your eyes and someone spoke to you, would you know what they said? Or

do you hear a sort of 'buzz buzz' that helps you to lip read and have simple

yes/no type conversations on the phone.

I never did find out. So I'm asking all you other ABI users out there. Can

anyone tell me?

Mark,

That certainly rings a bell (ding-dong!). The other girl was Ken Arcia's

sister. As you must know by now, I am not good at remembering names!!

The ABI does not work the same as the cochlear, if someone is talking behind

you or you have your eyes closed then there is no way you will be able to

know what they are saying, but it does help lipreading alot !!

Adam who also really loves his ABI

Unfortunately, both Ken and his sister have NF2. They are both very upbeat

about it. Ken was on the Crew a long time ago. I think he dropped out due to

all the ALDA work he got involed in.

Hi Adam,

Thanks to you and everyone else who posted about their ABI's. What everyone

said was basically what I thought the ABI was like. The reason I asked is

because I 'heard' rumors someone with an ABI can talk on the phone.

Actually, I can talk on the phone too but cant seem to hear on it. Perhaps

the person with the ABI meant they can hear the phone ring. Or perhaps they

meant they can have a simple conversation on the phone where hmmm means

'yes' and hmmm hmmm means 'no'. If computers can talk this way, I guess

people can too.

  • 1 month later...

http://www.cochlear.com/resources/

This web page lists multiple sites (with detailed

contact information) for Nucleus Multichannel Auditory

Brainstem Implant (ABI) Clinics in the U.S. (CA, IL,

IN, IA, MO, NY, PA, TN, TX)

" For additional information on the Multichannel ABI

system please contact Cochlear Corporation at

v/tdd. " (I copied that from the

web-page.) I guess they would know other places in

the world... (although I don't know if they would

offer info. if it was for another company's implant,

it it exists) But Cochlear is an international

company, so there may be ABI clinics in other

countries... (I only did a quick look around...)

(who loves her snow, but is quite envious of

Jennette's trip to Hawaii)

Alaska and Hawaii are definitely on my " dream

vacation " lists! Maybe I need to change my

occupational choice to gameshow contestant...
