Hi Heidi What you've described above sounds exactly like my sciatica was before I went for surgery. I had RSD as well and the two were very different. The sciatica was a sharp pain that went from my backside to my feet, straight down the back of my legs. The RSD was a burning pain. I felt like I had fire ants biting me all over my lower legs. Thanks to the world's best orthopaedic surgeon, I no longer have either of those pains. Now if I could just get rid of all the rest of the problems. lol -- Lyndi Moderator

Hi Heidi - I'm sorry you're in increased pain, and especially that your doctor isn't available. You may want to go to the emergency room if something has signficantly changed in your pain, particularly if the pain is so severe you can't stand it. You may have herniated a disk, or something else serious could be going on. Make sure if you go that you tell them that this is a big change in the pattern of your pain - not just an increase. I am curious, though - how would you describe your sciatica, if not shooting severe pains down the backs of your legs? That's how mine feels - like electric shocks from the buttocks down to my toes, like someone plucking those sciatic nerves like a guitar string, like acid pouring down the insides of my legs and pooling in my feet, like the worst hamstring spasm you've ever experienced that never lets up, like the backs of my legs are on fire. However, the fact that anything touching your legs makes them hurt is definitely different. You're right, that's not sciatica. That sounds more like RSD or CRPS - reflexive sympathetic dystrophy or complex regional pain syndrome. Here's some information on RSD/CRPS, including a description of its causes and symptoms: http://www.rsdhope.org/ Cheryl in AZ Moderator
Guest guest
Heidi, Has your neuro suggested MS? You seem to have alot of the same symptoms as I do, especially with the leg pain. I hope not but it's just a thought. I'll be praying, Carol (OK) Heidi Schmidt wrote: I am in need of some help if any body can help me? Guest guest
Hi Lyndi, Thanks for getting back to me so quick. I had surgery on my sciatica last July! But I was never told about RSD? Thats a new one for me! I tell you today is no better I really don't think I have ever felt this much pain in my life. I have a huge pain thresh hold so this has to be big for me to say it really hurts. I feel the burning in both legs and shooting pain and it's over the top. I just can't take it again tonight. I have applied heat , But it just seems nothing will ease it not even a bath and thats getting risky because I am by myself and there a chance I could fall.My husband works in Portland and stays there all week. So it's just me here. Thanks again for the insight on RSD. Hugs, Heidi Or

Cheryl I'm not sure if I have sciatica or RSD? I had a Laminechtamy and a nerve root done last July 2006. So am not sure if that fixes your sciatica or not? My legs are still killing me. I still have had 3 days of no or little sleep. I think your right it's probley time for me to go the ER. Thanks for your time and information you all are very much apprecaited in my book! Hope for a pain free day, Heidi Schmidt Or Hi Heidi - > > more like RSD or CRPS - reflexive sympathetic dystrophy or complex > > Here's some information on RSD/CRPS, including a description of its > causes and symptoms: > > http://www.rsdhope.org/ > > Cheryl in AZ > Moderator >
Guest guest
Heidi, I have the same pain. I do have sciatica and 3 discs that press against the nerve. Very painful, I am so afraid of surgery and pain shots, my DR has me on a pain management schedule and physical therapy once I recover from a Breast explant surgery I had 3 months ago. I am thinking about you and wish you pain free days.
Guest guest
I've been reading about your leg pain and can certainly sympathize as I have had constant leg pain and weakness in the legs and low back for the past five months. I have other problems too, but my legs use to be so strong and now they are so weak and painful, I can barely get up out of a chair and get moving. I saw a Neurologist the other day and he sent me for an update MRI and is going to conduct some type of nerve test next week. He's talking about epidural pain blocks, and possible surgery, depending on the test results. It all sounds pretty scary and like continued pain. I'm presently on a lot of Lorcet 10 mg. per day and Soma, some nerve pain medication and none of it is working. He started me on a new medication, but said it would take two weeks to build it up in my system, so not sure if it will help. Anyway, I wish you all well, and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I too would like to echo my thanks to Cheryl and the other Moderators who provide so much of their time and expertise to making this a great group.
