If so, you noticed they did not have TTY's, captioned TV's, or any of the modern technologies that are available now. I use ASL and PSE what's so wrong with that? Who are you to say what people should learn or not? Marie and I chatted in Houston and I don't think I ever gave the impression that I'd rather be chatting with someone who knows ASL. My thoughts for us late deafened is to use what ever we feel comfy using. Why is that wrong? We can live with our deafness, but we don't have to live with the insensitivity and ignorance of the outside world to those who aren't deaf like us. I was still able to get around and communicate with people. I mean I went off, by myself, to Chinatown for lunch at the con. I really get upset with people who say ASL this or ASL that. I dont use ASL and I know of very few Late deafned that do. I use more PSE or really I just use signs NOT ASL. AS for expressivenes on the face, well I have a paralysis and thus far, in these many years, it has not been a problem communicating in signs with people. The problem has been with HEARING people and speaking to them. The other excuse I hear, well is it hard to learn? Well is French hard to learn or Spanish and how long does it take to learn them? That equals sign as well. Get off the ASL crap. Marie signed to me , just a few signs she knew and I understoood her very well and also I was able to lipread her even with her paralysis. I just get so sick of the excuse people give for not learning a few SIGNS. The bottom line is you CAN live deaf. It may not be great, but you CAN. Things are getting so much more accessible these days then before. Cathrine and Mikey what did you think of the lights flashing when the subway train was coming? That is neat. Paralysis can be fixed and you live with it. Deafness, to some extent can be fixed and things in your enviroment can be fixed.
