I gotta answer back on this one.I made up an informal list of things that I

will NOT eat in public.Spaghetti is right up there withtacos although I have

become pretty good with them.

My wife, knows the ones I shy away from and the only way I have figured

out to eaat spaaghetti without wearingit is to cut it up with a fork.We

have

spaghetti at my Wednesdaay nite bible study and theres just no getting

around

it unless I stop at Mcs and bring my own dinner.Anyone out there wanna

toss thier most chalengingfood to eat on the list??....Jim in FL

Whole apples were a tough one for me for a while. Now I've sort of got them

figured out ... buy small macs, and discreetly move your lips out of the way

before you bite. Bagels can be nasty if I eat them the wrong way ... have

to go in a circle ... keep biting to the left (right facial paralysis).

The biggest pain for me is to try and have a bowl of soup. With me eating

requires two-handed technique. One shovels food in the mouth, the other

holds my mouth closed afterward to keep the food from flying back out. Wish

I could say this method was effective but I still manage to have a lap full

of food after every meal. Can't go outside afterwards or stray cats start

following me around :)

LOL I can't remember exactly, but you were sharing things you learned in

PT. Like eating with special utensils. Being sure to cut your food in

smaller pieces than you would usually. Oh man, I still take too big of

bites. People wonder why I hold my hand over my mouth when I'm chewing, its

because I'm holding the food in. lol Can you remember what other tips you

had, Jennette?

Petito was the one that told me to hold my hand over my

mouth.:-) Well, he didn't tell me but I was watching him.:-) We

went to dinner one night at a Mexican place and we were eating

enchiladas and he kept putting his hand over his mouth. Good

idea I thought.!:-) It was the first time I went out to eat " in

public " with anyone and I bet it looked funny throwing my napkin

to my face after every bite to cover my sometimes open moth, hold

the food in or push my cheek to dislodge food from it.:-) It was

less obvious PT told me. I don't know though, Greg is always

" Use your napkin! " :-) But throwing up my napkin all the time, I

was told, looks like I'm spitting my food into it, like a kid

trying to hide their brussel sprouts.:-)

The utensils thing. Well PT also told that " baby utensils " are

very good for facial paralysis. They told me that many stroke

patients do this. Just carry a nice pouch in your purse or pocket

when you go out with a baby fork (I found shrimp cocktail forks

are good too) and a baby spoon. Works real good to get things in

without getting it all over your lips. I use these alot at home

but always seem to forget them when I go out. When I have

remembered, sometimes I forgot my fork and leave it on my plate

and the waiter takes it. If you do this, make sure you put it

aside after the meal, those guys are fast.:-)

June,

Add gyros (greek pita with lamb, beef or chicken meat) to the list. I have

no facial problems but twice in downtown Seattle now I made a baffoon out of

myself eating one. The first problem is that it was a little street vendor

in the Pike Place market so there was no where to sit. So here I am walking

along eating this gyro and unknowingly dripping white cucumber sauce all down

the front of my jacket. Then as you get further down the pita everything

starts falls out (lettuce and tomato) and it gets all over your hands and

face. Both times my parents were with me and starting laughing once we

stopped and they saw what a wreck I was. Somehow my dad (and my fiance)

manages to eat them with no mess. I think it is because they have bigger

mouths and like to inhale their food. Last time I vowed not to eat one there

again. I will get it to go and eat it at home. LOL :o)

That's my story!

Hey Jim and all you spaghetti lovers,

I'm Italian and was raised on the stuff. Gotta love it! I would shy away

from it at first too and preferred a smaller bite-size pasta like penne. But

spaghetti is more fun. Once you get the twirling action down pat, you will

never make a mess.

Buon Appetito!
