All he said was " no more than 30 mins and don't keep it too hot. " We've kept it at 100 degrees, which is not too hot. I don't even break out in a sweat. I was worried about keeping my balance in it, but so far it has not been a problem at all. I would be concerned if my balance was a lot worse than it is though. If anyone has had a doctor tell them exactly why we shouldn't use a hot tub, I'd be interested in hearing it. Maybe it has something to do with getting dizzy or having the blood rush to your head or something?? na Re: Hot Tubs You have got to be kidding???? Guest guest Posted November 12, 1999 Report Share Posted November 12, 1999 I'm not sure why a doctor would tell someone with NF2 not to use a hot tub. To use caution, and not stay in it too long, yes. But I find that it helps ease neck pain and stiffness (and it helps you sleep, too). I have to be careful getting in/out of mine, but I use the handrail. I find that after I've been in the tub for a few minutes, my legs get even weaker than they normally are. They're usually like rubber legs, but after a dip in the tub they become totally worthless. I have to sit for a few minutes outside the tub before I go back inside the house. But when my body temperature is low (like if I go in our pool in the winter, only in south FL!) my legs seem a lot stronger. Maybe I should move to Alaska? Maybe the heat has an effect on the tumors? My dad is now retired from the San , CA Fire Dept. where he was a captain for 20-something years. (He still uses his badge to impress the chicks :-)) He was going on shift one morning and the previous shift was just returning from a medical call. They said some guy was happy in his hot tub the night before and stayed in after his wife got out and went to bed. She got up the next morning and he was still in there, she thought he was sleeping, but he had died. Turns out the heat raises your blood temperature, and body heat passes through the top of your head. So in effect this guy's brains stewed and he died maybe an hour after he passed out. Hot tubs can be dangerous to anybody. Prolonged exposure WILL cause brain damage. That's why they have timers. Its the same kinda deal if you get a really hgh fever, say 105. When you get to the hospital the first thing they do is ice you down to bring your temp down before brain damage occurs. You also dehydrate very quickly cuz your ! body is pushing out as much fluid as it can through your sweat glands. The question I guess for us is, does this heat transfer process through the head increase chances of stroke or in any way affect tumors? When I get out of a hot tub I HAVE to sit and wait a few cuz all the blood rushes outa my head and I get real close to passing out. So blood vessels are affected. Our tumors in the head and scar tissue from previous surgeries also affect blood vessels. So maybe we face a higher risk. I'm sure we're safe. Just don't stay in there too long. BUT I think it would depend on how long you sit in it and how hot it is. I'm going away this weekend and the place I'm staying has a great private hot tub. The house they recently moved to has one and they just got it set up. Of course I was horrified when I found out about that guy dying in the tub! My mom will ususally get out before my dad while he sits out there under the stars. My dad is the type of guy who can fall asleep anywhere if he gets too relaxed so I had to call my mom and warn her about letting his brain cook in the tub. I think I remember her saying that his blood pressure does get high so she has to watch him and make sure the temp is not above 102 degrees. Let me know how your experiment goes and please do not brave it by yourself!!! Go when there is alot of people so if you pass out someone can help you. Have fun on the trip!!!!
