Guest guest
It's the traditional name for the day after Christmas - always been a holiday here - although in recent years, some jurisdictions have been allowing stores to open that day. This isn't traditional, but with after Christmas sales in mind, the term is often extended to the whole week in sales advertising - so now we have Boxing Week. Guest guest
Pierre / Teri in Texas, Boxing Day in Australia is similar to UK & Canada in that it is traditionally the day after Christmas Day and is observed as a national public holiday. Everywhere is usually closed with the exception of service stations, a few clubs and large department stores in the city (they hold their after Christmas sales) I think it originated in the UK in medievil times and was so named because of the tradition of giving gifts (hence boxes) on that day. Guest guest
We have Boxing Day here in Australia too. I read something on Boxing Day a few years back and how it got started, but I can't remember it all now. From what I can remember, there used to be some sort of boxing matches on the day after Christmas (which stopped a long time ago), and that's how Boxing Day got going. Where I live, on Boxing Day, some shops are open for a short amount of time to have their sales, where they will often thave things going for half price or less. > Okay, I'm Canada-illiterate, which is pretty sad considering your > country is right on top of ours.....but what exactly is " Boxing Day " > all about? Guest guest
Boxing Day for me was a test of willpower. To parents for lunch. Cream cheese sandwiches with walnuts in them, egg salad sandwiches, meat pate sandwiches, meatballs, potato salad (not pre-soaked), garbanzo bean salad, and left-over meat pie and turkey from the night before, cheese plate with pickles and olives. Considering that I'm allowed only 3 ounces of protein in a day, renal diet lasted about 2 minutes. Willpower still needs some work : ) Pierre
Guest guest
I hate to say this, but I don't envy anyone who is on the renal diet- I dread the fact that maybe I could end up on it one day. Don't worry, Pierre, I don't think I would have lasted more than a couple of minutes either on Christmas day or Boxing day if I was on the renal diet. To everyone else who is also on the renal diet, how did you all cope with Christmas? > Boxing Day for me was a test of willpower. To parents for lunch. Guest guest
I seem to recall reading somewhere that the term 'Boxing Day' was derived because the day after Christmas was traditionally when the charities would open their boxes of donations, which they would then distribute to the needy. Not sure about that, though. Curtis in Ontario, Canada Re: To Pierre We have Boxing Day here in Australia too.
