Guest guest
Derrick, or any other Aussies, Do you have any recommendations for private pay health care cover? I am planning to marry my fiance and move to Australia () sometime during this year and we will have to look for a program that will cover me. My current kidney function is very good. I understand that most of the groups have pre-existing condition exclusions for some period of time, which should not be a problem given that my health is still pretty good as long as my BP is controlled. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks, > , > I am with Medibank and I too have been concerned about the > problems associated with Australian health insurance funds and treatment for > IGAN related problems. Guest guest
I currently live in , Australia, but I don't currently have health insurance, I'm afraid, so I can't offer you any advice in that regard, unfortunately. Hopefully, someone else will be able to. > > , > > I am with Medibank and I too have been concerned about > the > > problems associated with Australian health insurance funds and > treatment for > > IGAN related problems. Guest guest
Im currently in Japan, and am worrying about the same thing. Sorry I am not much help on this one either. Guest guest
, Sorry for the delayed response, I have been away up north on holiday. As far as health funds are concerned, I am in a health fund, Medibank Private. I live in NSW and there are other health funds available. They all generally have a 12 month waiting period for pre existing conditions. There are 2 components to the health fund, hospital benefit for stays in a private hospital with your choice of doctor and extra benefits which include things like dental, reading glasses, chiropractor etc. Private health insurance is a complicated area and benefits vary from one fund to another. Added to this is the Medicare system which is the government health care scheme which covers everyone. The only difference here is that if you need hospital treatment you are treated as a public patient and you cannot (in most cases) choose your specialist. If you see a General Practitioner, and that practitioner does not " bulk bill " , then you pay out of your own pocket the difference between what the government allow and what the doctor charges. This can range form zero to A$30 generally. If I visit my Neph, he charges A$80. I can claim back $50 from Medicare, the remaining A$30, I pay even though I have top private medical insurance. My advice is do not worry about it yet, wait until you arrive here. If you are coming to NSW, I can post to you a free booklet issued by the Australian Government about the Medicare scheme explaining how it works. I think I am correct is saying that there are reciprocal agreements between UK and Australia, an you should be covered. I could also send a couple of booklets explaining about the private medical schemes if it will put your mind at rest. Guest guest
Thanks for responding, Derrick. I appreciate any information and advice that I can get. I will be living in when I do get to OZ and I think I will just have my fiance research the plans in the area and choose one that seems reasonable. I definitely need good private cover because as an immigrant, I will not be eligible for medicare for 2 years until I get my permanent visa (I am a US citizen so there is no reciprocity). There will be a 12 month pre-existing coverage clause, but that should not matter too much because my condition is really quite good. Again, thanks. I know it will all work out. > > > , > > > I am with Medibank and I too have been concerned about > > the > > > problems associated with Australian health insurance funds and > > treatment for > > > IGAN related problems. Guest guest
Derrick, Your reply below would be an excellent basis for a permanent file on Aussie health care in our Files section. If you want to write it up or modify it as you see fit, with your name on it as the author, you could either upload it to the Files section yourself, or email it to me for uploading. Ultimately, it needs to be in html format so members can open it and read it with just their normal browser. Guest guest
I live in and i don't have private health cover.....it costs sooooo much ! I find i don't need it anyway, but i do live in the country not the city. I had the choice of which neph i could see but the closest is a 3 hour drive away in Melbourne, and she bulk bills, so it cost me nothing at all to see her. But it costs me around $100 au by the time i pay for petrol and parking the car in the city! If you go private sometimes they don't cover everything like they do through medicare (it really sucks). Eg: When i had my children i was admitted as a medicare patient and it didn't cost me a thing and with my second child i had a room to myself with it's own toilet and shower. My friend who had one of her children 5 weeks apart from me, went in as a private patient and it ended up costing her around $300 and she had to share a room because the 2 private one's where taken! It's something i would really look into before committing yourself to..... well after the two years are up where you said you have to go private. kaz Re: Relationships and IGA > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > TY!! > > > > > > > > > > > > I was just feeling a bit down tonight, and so wrote what I > > did. Guest guest
Pierre, I do not mind who uses it or how it is used, do as you see fit. However, I have since looked at a couple of web sites and they may be of more use in the files section for members of our group: Information on the Australian National Medicare scheme (where every Australian Resident is covered) can be found at www.hic.gov.au This web site has information on reciprocal health care arrangements for visitors from the following countries: Ireland, UK, Sweden, Netherlands, Finland, Malta and Italy. It also has download information kits to help prospective migrants in several languages other than English viz. Chinese (Mandarin), Croation,Greek, Indonesian,Italian, Macedonian, Serbian, Spanish and Vietnamese. For private medical insurance I have listed a few of the major ones: www.medibankprivate.com.au www.hcf.com.au www.nibcom.au www.mbf.com.au The advantage of having the web site address is that if things change, then people can get comprehensive up to date information and not rely on my fact finding skills.
