Ignorance is bliss (or is it?)

And now for something truly ignorant...

Could anyone point me to any formal publication, aside from the Guide, for

references from both the APTA and the AOTA, as well as any federal regulations,

in which is addressed the " absolute " must for any patient referred to PT or OT

to be first evaluated by a PT or OT and only then the delegation of care to a

PTA or COTA. This instead of accepting the MD's plan of care as is.

Secondly, as my state (Michigan) does not formally regulate PTAs or COTAs, where

can I find a reference as to for whom a PTA works, under whose authority? Can a

PTA or COTA work under the authority of a MD? Or by virtue of their title and

education can they only accept work from a PT or OT?

While I would not mind hearing about your clinical practice, what I really need

is some published references. Also please refrain from stating the obvious as I

am quite aware that it is the absolute preferred practice that PTs and OTs first

evaluate the patient. What I need is solid references that back this issue up.

Sincerely,

van Well, PT
