Guest guest
Hi all, After all this lung transplant work up stuff, I found out that I have a little bit of acid reflux. I was reading up on it and this line caught my eye: So, GERD is a common cause of unexplained coughing. I found that VERY interesting. I've never been checked for gastric reflux and never have had any symptoms of it either. Maybe this is why I cough like a fool. Just wanted to share. Leanne uip 1/03 Have a burning question? Guest guest
Leanne, I never had GERD until I started the Prednisone and Imuran ( which for some good reasons have worked to stabilize the NSIP). I need a great deal of Nexium 40 mg X 2 and Pepcid 20mg X 3 to keep the GERD under control. I'm supposed to have an endoscopy some time down the road after the Prednisone is at 10 mg daily and the Imuran is less than 100 mg, to check for problems caused by the GERD. My coughing has never been non-stop..just dry and annoying. It's thankfully lessened over the past 19 months and so far the fibrosis has not gotten worse!!!! Of course, as I type this I've started to cough!!! Guest guest
My pulmo doc said that coughing can cause the GERD. After a year and a half of cough, violently most times, I too now have GERD. I take protonix 40mg once a day, sleep with the mattress genie, no food 2 hrs before bed and no soda, choc, or fried foods before bed. All by my doc request, he said that with GERD the acid can get into the lungs and cause more problems. That is why some many precautions. My coughing has gotten worst and have now been coughing for over 2 and a half years, with no relief, once I think it is getting better it starts all over again. And don't even mention the word, cough,I will start up. I ordered the NAC and will try that , as the inhaled version and me didn't get a long. It is like sulfur and made me very ill. I hope the NAC will help as it seems to help ya'll. Donna
Guest guest
Donna, My doc started me on GERD meds. I didn't have any symptoms. But, as the disease progressed, the symptoms started. I have reflux really bad now. The more coughing, the more reflux. It is just miserable. It has scarred up my larynx and keeps my throat and mouth sore. It evidently just comes with the territory.Try mixing the Acetylcysteine with saline water (there is one that is made especially for the nebulizer, don't use any other) I have done that and it works really well. I also use DuoNeb and that makes a big difference. Is your cough productive?Be well.Hugs, Joyce PF 1997 Bronchiectasis 2004 Indiana>> My pulmo doc said that coughing can cause the GERD. Guest guest
Donna, This is interesting. Maybe because of all my coughing I've now got GERD. I don't have any symptoms. With the lung transplant workup, part of the testing is to see whether or not I have GERD. They did an endoscopy and a ph test where I wore a thing down my nose for 24 hours attached to a halter. Today I ate oatmeal and laid on a table flat on my back for 2 hours while they watched my stomach empty. Tom, did you have to do this too? I find it very interesting. I guess they don't want you to have acid reflux because it will ruin the new lungs. Coughing has always been a BIG part of my disease. I'll let you know what I find out. Guest guest
Donna, Have you tried tea for your cough? It really helps me but my cough is a dry cough and NAC seems to work on productive ones.
