Hi !

Welcome out of lurkdom!

I had surgery 9/2003 and lost 141 pounds (278 down to 137) at my

best by October 2004. I suffered an unexplained weight gain of 14

pounds in 2 weeks and my doctor suspected ovarian cancer. After

undergoing several tests and four surgeries the problem was

resolved. However,I was admitted overnight in December 2004 after an

out patient surgery because of suspected internal bleeding. That was

when my poor labs were discovered. Low iron, poor blood gases etc.

I was taking all my vitamins and consuming 80-100 grams of protein a

day via protein powder and bars. The problem was that I was NOT

absorbing most of it! My body's insulin and cholesterol were

elevated despite a nearly fat free diet and controlled glucose

readings.

I transfered my gastric bypass aftercare to an endocrinologist in

December 2004 and she instructed me to change my eating habits and

now orders and monitors frequent lab tests. They are still below

acceptable levels, in part because I have failed to follow her meal

plans and take insulin. However, my iron and B 12 are wihin normal

range now, albeit at the low end. I take oral vits and B!2

sublingual on a daily basis.

Is your sister under the care of a endocrinologist or other

specialist? I never heard of B12 injections in the nose (ouch!) Why

can't she use B12 under the tongue?

Best wishes to her,

Robyn

> My sister in law had her surgery dec. 2003 and has lost from

290 to 160 so far, but my concern is her test results. She says that

allbut one of her bloodwork came back abnormal, her Iron is STILL

low and she is going to have to start b12 injections in the nose. I

myself was thinking of having the surgery, but after all this not

sure if I want to. Has anyone ever had this problem or known anyone

with this problem, and what was done to correct it??
