Hello all, I hope each of you are having a more comfortable day than

me!

I need to know what else is there (other than Percoset) that will have

the same pain relieving action as percoset but is NOT percoset? I am

on the max dose of Hydrocodone now 2 5/550 four times a day. It isn't

working for my pain. My Dr said to give it a week, then we would talk

again. It has been five days. He suggested Percoset at our last visit

but I am afraid that is not a good option for me.

I can't take Percoset, it makes me feel ill and generally makes me

vomit so I need to know if there is something else I can suggest to my

Dr. He is very willing to listen to my suggestions as long as I have a

good reason for asking for something. (Plus, he knows I am looking for

relief, not anything else)

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Tammy S

You might try Gabapentin. I tried a lot of other meds for pain, but

they either didnt work or the side effects were as bad as the pain.

with gabapentin the pain is deminished, and no side effects

Just FYI, that is nowhere near the " max " dose of hydrocodone. What's

limiting your dose is the amount of acetominophin in that combination.

The hydrocodone is only 5 mg, the aceto is the 550 mg in that formula.

There are other formulations of hydrocodone with double the amount of

opiate and less acetominophin per pill. For example, the brand Norco

(there's also a generic of it) has 10 mg of hydrocodone and only 350 mg

of aceto each. You can take a lot more hydrocodone than you are taking

in a day, as long as you don't overdose on acetominiphin. I've been

prescribed as much as two 10/350s at a time (20 mg of hydrocodone!)

every four hours (not every six - the drug simply doesn' last longer

than 3 and half hours at best, which would leave you in pain for

several hours a day!)

If an appropriate dose of hydrocodone doesn't work for you, there are

lots of other options. Percocet is made up of oxycodone and

acetominophin - so you could try Oxycontin, which is simply an extended

release version of oxycodone without the added Tylenol, but you might

have the same side effects. Often those side effects will go away

after a couple of weeks, so you might want to give it time to work and

see if you can tolerate it if the side effects are at all manageable at

first.

If you just can't tolerate oxycodone in any form, there are always the

Fentanyl (Duragesic) patches, MSContin, methadone (a very inexpensive

and powerful alternative), morphine... the list goes on and I'm

probably missing a bunch.

Your doc really should be guiding you as to the next appropriate med to

try given your current dosage and pain levels.

Good luck and I hope you find something that works for you soon!
