Guest guest
Any ideas on how to get my 4-yr son to take pills and liquid meds? I have a horrible time getting him to take all the supps and meds he needs. He almost never gets a full dose of any oral med/supp. He has texture issues and is very restrictive w/ the foods he'll eat. I need help! Guest guest
I can so relate. My son is 10 and has similar issues. The only way I can get the supplements in him is in juice. Some others have suggested applesauce, but my son won't even eat that. Smoothies are another idea, but texture might be an issue (it is for us!) Hang in there. Guest guest
Soraya, We have been doing this for a long time and the worse mistake we made was to try to hid the suppl in any type of food and then they willnot eat that food. We made a mixture and put it into a syringe and give it. My child is now four and says--it is time for medicine. Many will object-but the cost of not giving the suppl and the cost of the wasted suppl. If you are really ready for the details I will be glad to share as the Parent to Parent from the ARI shared with us. If you need help email with any question and I we will help. bill.luce@... Guest guest
Hi Soraya - the tip about not hiding them in food is terrific and so important. You want your child to grow up loving food and the experience of tasting it. We also use juice as another mom mentioned - we use pomegranite as our boy is not allergic to it and it hides strong flavors well. We use a syringe to give them to him and though it was rough going at first, now when we say time for your " medicine " or " vitamins " he takes the syringe willingly. So don't give up - stay consistent! Another tip that I picked up from a mom on another board that I use everyday is Xylitol. Its a natural sugar substitute - especailly good to mix in with the least tasty supps/meds. It also is known to help lower yeast and strep in the gut! It was created as a low glycemic sweetner and is free of the following things: no wheat, no gluten, no soy, no dairy, no egg, no fish/shellfish, no nuts/treenuts. I use it when giving Modifilan and it works like a charm mixed in with the pomegranite juice. I found it at Whole Foods - in the supps section, not the sweetner aisle. Hang in there! Guest guest
Coromega is a great way to hide supplement. We stir in powders and open capsules and crushed pills. www.coromega.com Kirkman Labs has a list of helpful hints to get various supplements and meds in kids. www.kirkmanlabs.com You can try getting various things flavored and compounded. Dr. McCandless advocates a " tough love " approach. It works well and that is what we used.
