Guest guest
Hi, I can't think of any movies right off the top of my head, but I was watching Friends last night, like the third episode or something. It's the one where and Ross's parents come over for dinner, and they just keep barraging with everything that she's " doing wrong " or whatever, and she keeps saying, " Ross, don't you have something to talk about? " Well, finally, Ross tells his parents that the reason he and his wife divorced is because she's a lesbian, and now she's pregnant with his child. And the mom looks at and says, " And you knew about this? " It just reminded me so much of nada. Even my husband looked at me and said, " Ha ha, remind you of anyone? " Movies that I love but make me cringe So here I am with HBO on watching Because I Said So and I remember the first time I saw it I thought it reminded me of my life. Also The Upside of Anger, I rented it with a friend who really understands what is going on with me and my mom and 20 minutes in she looked and me and said, if you want we can shut this off. I can't think of anymore right now but I know there are tons! __.._,_.___ Messages in this topic (1) Reply (via web post) | Start a new topic Messages Problems? Guest guest
Now Voyager with Betty . The scene where she stands up to her mother & her mom is tearing into her, calling her selfish, etc, then the mom has a heart attack, is chilling....a weeper for sure. Guest guest
For me it's " Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood " . I just sobbed and sobbed when I watched it. I found out later that my middle sister had also. My baby sister won't get near the movie - we call her the " Queen of Denial " . My nada would come get me out of school on the excuse that I had a doctor's appointment but she'd take me out to a restaurant instead. The highs were high but the lows were really bad. To hear her talk she was a wonderful mother and I always wondered why I didn't feel the same way. Must have been something wrong with me. Thank you all for the stories and help you give - at 49 I'm finally beginning to understand so much! > > So here I am with HBO on watching Because I Said So and I remember the first time I saw it I > thought it reminded me of my life. > > Also The Upside of Anger, I rented it with a friend who really understands what is going on > with me and my mom and 20 minutes in she looked and me and said, if you want we can > shut this off. > > I can't think of anymore right now but I know there are tons! >
Guest guest
I'm curious (you don't have to answer) - what part of " Because I Said So " reminded you of your life? Thanks! >
Guest guest
I grew up in a single mother household and the mother younger daughter relationship is almost exactly like mine. My mother would and has gone behind my back to try and get someone to start a relationship with me. My mom if she every wants to buy me something when we are shopping it has to be something she likes not something I like. My mom tries to sabatoge relationships with people that she doesn't feel are appropriate. And most of all the title, If I heard it once I heard it 1000X. I am sure there is more, but I can't remember, I only saw it twice > > > > So here I am with HBO on watching Because I Said So and I remember > the first time I saw it I > > thought it reminded me of my life. > > > > Also The Upside of Anger, I rented it with a friend who really > understands what is going on > > with me and my mom and 20 minutes in she looked and me and said, if > you want we can > > shut this off. > > > > I can't think of anymore right now but I know there are tons! > > >
Guest guest
Speaking of Bette and Joan Crawford, has anyone here seen " Whatever Happened to Baby Jane " ?.That movie really makes me cringe.I never really want to watch it,but if I start to,I get sucked in and can't turn it off.Bette plays the part of a child actress who never grew up/BPD type and Joan Crawford is her sister/victim who is wheelchair bound after ' " Baby Jane " character maliciously hits her with her car to end her hopes of a stage career...That one might just be the creepiest film I've ever seen as a KO...Bette has been in some weird movies, she's actually very good at playing downright weird-she was also in " The Nanny " ,about a little boy who keeps telling everyone his nanny (Bette ) is vicious and a killer and nobody believes him, everyone thinks he's the crazy one, until " the nanny " exposes herself by her behavior...two very weird cringe-worthy films but I couldn't say that I love them! > > Now Voyager with Betty . Guest guest
Yes, I've seen it! Very disturbing! is excellent as a BPD, too good, if you ask me. I saw a documentary on her recently & it sounds like she really was, from the descriptions of those who knew her (impulsive, self destructive affairs, alcoholic, violent, etc...) I still enjoy her films though... Makes me feel for us KO's daughter inlaws!!! I have a good one so I too am lucky. Guest guest
" Friends " : 's relationship with her mom. " Everbody Loves " : obvious. " I'll Cry Tomorrow " : Hayward movie. " Because I Said So " : Diane Keaton. " One True Thing " : Totally my mom when she's acting " normal " " Psycho " : Soooo creepy. " Mommie Dearest " : Its weird, because my mom rarely behaved this bad, BUT she made me feel this bad. Make sense? " Disney's Cinderella " : The Stepmother. " Manchurian Candidate " : This mother brainwashes her son, and baby coddles him...kinda the way my mom does, its too creepy. " Summer Place " : A classic with Dee in it. The way her mother treats her in this movie reminds me EXACTLY of my mom. Its gross! XOXO EVERYONE! Bernadette
Guest guest
I DON'T love these movies but they did make me cringe: 1. Sherry Baby. I had to turn it off in the middle. My nada wasn't a low functioning one, nor did she have a drug problem, but the Sherry character's clinging to her daughter and wanting so bad to pretend to be a 'real' mother just made me squirm. It was awful. A very well done movie I could not bear to see. 2. Monster in law. I did watch the whole thing, but with little enjoyment. and of course Everybody Loves , here here! > > > " Friends " : 's relationship with her mom. > > " Everbody Loves " : obvious. > > " I'll Cry Tomorrow " : Hayward movie. > > " Because I Said So " : Diane Keaton. > > " One True Thing " : Totally my mom when she's acting " normal " > > " Psycho " : Soooo creepy. > > " Mommie Dearest " : Its weird, because my mom rarely behaved this > bad, BUT she made me feel this bad. Guest guest
White Oleander. My smother wasn't quite as much of an ice queen as Pfiffer's character but she is an artist too and personality wise they are close enough that this movie gives me the heebee jeebees every time I see it. Guest guest
Nada once raged at me and sis over wire hangers. I saw that movie a few years later and it really creeped me out. She said almost the exact same things! I don't think she saw the irony... or the movie for that matter. To this day a friend who I've known since junior high says " No more wire hangers! " everytime I mention nada. Jae Re: Movies that I love but make me cringe White Oleander. I can remember countless rages she would go into, for no purpose. One time several months after my first child was born (back in 1987), one night Nada came over to watch baby while I went out for several hours. When I got back home she tore into me, one side and down the other, about how " this baby is starving, I heard her belly growling, " and how " breastfeeding is from the olden days when women didn't work and were with their babies all the time, it's wrong to breastfeed in this day and age. " She went on and on about how I was starving my daughter, all because I chose to breastfeed and she bottle fed all of us (which the doctor and hospital advised me to do, by the way, to breastfeed, plus the baby had plenty of wet diapers and was gaining weight. And never mind all the medical facts known about how breastfeeding is actually BETTER for the baby than bottle feeding formula, they pick up immunities from breast milk, it is better for them, you bond better with your baby, etc.). She just went on and on, in a total tirade, about how I was starving my baby and saying things like, " It's your baby, not mine " and " I heard her belly growl - she is starving. Guest guest
I don't know what year Mommy Dearest came out but I remember hearing about it a lot when I was about middle school age. I had not seen the movie myself but from the talk , I knew it was about a crazy Mom that was very mean to her children or daughter. One day I thought it would be a funny joke to call my Nada " Mommy Dearest " I was kidding around and I think I answered one of her questions with " Yes, Mommy dearest " Well, Oh my GAWD! I think my Nada's head spun around about 3 or 4 times , her eyes bulged from the sockets with red veins popping out, her voice turned low and evil....seriously she looked like she had instantly become possessed by the devil. She screamed at me in that deep raspy voice NOT TO EVER CALL HER THAT AGAIN, OR SHE WILL REALLY SHOW ME WHAT MOMMIE DEAREST REALLY IS. Not that she even thought for one second about the fact that I had not seen the movie and that I didn't really know what I was saying. Many years later when I finally saw the movie, of coarse I was chilled to the bone at how the personality type and my feelings were the same. She never hit me or did anything physical to me like in the movie but our relationship was so much like the movie. I wondered why my Nada freaked so bad when I said that, (Did she know she was like that?, obviously she did) I always thought she didn't know somehow, that she was mentally unable to be aware of how awful she really was. I guess deep down she knew and actually, even though I hadn't seen the movie back then, I knew too. DeeDee > > > The movie that makes me shiver is Mommy Dearest. Guest guest
I just saw Georgia Rules with Jane Fonda et al. Was interesting but far from realistic. What do you expect this is Hollywoods version of dyfuntional reality, right? Other fav's...Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood. Best line was where Bullocks character quips something about not being a good writer were it not for her dysfunctional upbringing. (Really should bring that one back from nada's house, LOL) One of my biggest defense mechanisms has been to make fun of just how crazy, dramatic and dysfunctional my life has been. Learning to laugh at my life and my foo's life has been therapeutic for me. Seeing so many similar scenes played out in movies makes me realize that I am not alone. xoxo Carla
Guest guest
I never saw the movie but I remember when the book & movie came out. More specifically, I remember nada & fada ranting about what an ungrateful brat Crawford was. Especially being adopted, they said, she has no right to drag that poor woman's name through the mud when she's dead & can't defend herself. Too weird, now... Guest guest
I had never heard of the movie Mommy Dearest until last year. One of my cousins had always called my nada " Auntie Dearest " I thought it was the funniest thing, because my nada always felt so special when she was calle that and yet the tone of voice that my cousin used was a little condescending. As a child I started calling my nada Mommy Dearest behind her back when I was mad at her to my sister or to my friends. When I watched the movie last year, I felt like it was the worst kind of irony... now everytime I call her Mommy Dearest I think about the movie and feel really guilty for having called her that my entire life, but also strangely honest because the scenese that experienced in the movie are very parallell to my experiences growing up. > > > > > > The movie that makes me shiver is Mommy Dearest.
