Hi magnesium oxide is very harsh. Use the citrate it is very gentle.

constipation

Does anyone know a good quick way to keep the bowels moving? I've tried the

bowel program, but nothing seems to work. One of the only things that work is

using casor oil. The constipation may be due to a medication, I'm not sure. Any

suggestions?

Hi ,

I use magnesium oxide all the time and I don't find this form of

magnesium harsh at all. I take it at night, 500-1000 mgs and within 10

minutes of waking up, I have no problem moving my bowels at all! I had

orginally started taking it for leg cramps, when I discovered it's

benefits for bowel movements.

I am curious what you mean by harsh.

For Reysean: I think you may have a blockage so you need to be careful

with fiber, because that can make it worse. The last time I felt a

blockage, and it was high in my small intestine, I used " smoothe move "

tea, by Traditional Medicinals, and that took care of the problem

overnight. However, I got the shakes, severe nausea, sweats, and could

feel the blockage moving through my system. When it was finally

expelled, (about 8 hours after taking the tea), it was full of foreign

looking matter. I immediately felt so much better once it was out of me!

Try Miraculous Magnesium from www.HealthSavers.info. It is the only one that

works for my wife and she has been taking it for some time now. It takes a

couple of weeks get an order though. I only take it when I begin to get leg

cramps and seems to work. If I take it more than once a day it certainly

makes you go and I don’t need it for that. You can read about it at that web

site. Better than anything else? I have no idea. Maybe someone on the list

knows. I certainly distrust most anything you can buy in the grocery or

drug store as I don’t trust big manufactures. I have no relationship with

the company just passing on information.

Hi ,

I'm new here but just wanted to mention that I too have found relief

from constipation with magnesium oxide - magnesium citrate which my

doctor recommended did not work for me. I found info somewhere that

stated that the oxide version was the best for drawing water to the

bowel and it works for me. Most times I can get by with 400 mg a day

but sometimes have to double that for a day or two.

I guess what may be harsh for some people may be ideal for others.

D,

Magnesium citrate works all the time as far as my clinical experience goes. It

is a question f dose and how well people absorbe magnesium or how displaced

toward calcium they are. Oxide draws water to the gut better than any other

compound however it is dangerous for those bordering dehydration.

It is also much harder to titrate and thus inconvenient to dose. In some

patients decreases the transit time below 8 hours which to me is unacceptable

particularly for the older population faced with malnutrition already.

Regards

.

I tried everything, the smooth move, magnesium oxide, a colon cleanser, etc.

but nothing worked for my mother. So I finally took her to get a colonic. So

far her bowels have been moving very well after the colonic. I give her one

colon cleanser and magnesium oxide now...

Have you tried to " move " the liver? If the liver is not manufacturing sufficient

bile to emulsify fats, or if the gallbladdres is not flowing, constipation will

result as well. This is another source of constipation much overlooked and

everpresent in our adult population.

Try Beta TPC from Biotics or any liver emolient formualtion. Choline, Taurine,

bile salts, Beetroot, etc also help.

Aloe juice in between meals helps along to lubricate the track..

Finally dont forget water and fiber. One needs to drink not less than 64 oz of

clean water (in addition to all other fluids) and 40 grams of fiber a day.

Good luck

Hi Isabel,

You can find it at any health food store, or online.

I use the NSI brand from vitacost.com It is inexpensive, and you should

always get it in capsule form.

Sorry, ginger tea won't do it unfortunately. She is extremely allergic to it.

Any other ideas? I have heard that chlorella is good for constipation as well.

==>Eileen, please read the article I wrote " Allergies, What They Are

and How to Treat Them " in which it states that Healing Reactions are

Not Allergic Reactions. Also allergy tests are totally unreliable -

see our Allergies Folder for lots of information.

==>If she is getting healing reactions from ginger tea (made from

pure certified organic ginger root at home of course) then that is

exactly what her body needs most in order to heal - that's why she is

getting such reactions. When a person gets healing reactions to a

good unadulterated food, spice or herb the way to handle it is to

start with small amounts and only gradually increase them in order to

minimize the reactions so they are tolerable. To avoid such foods,

etc. is to avoid their wonderful healing powers.

==>Chlorella won't hurt her but she shouldn't take any more than 3

tbls. per day so it might not help her constipation. For help with

constipation see the Digestion Folder.

She had such a severe reaction to ginger tea that it sent her to hospital in an

ambulance. She briefly went into shock, and had trouble breathing. I am not

taking a chance with that at this time. I will have a look at that folder.

Thank you.

Bee,

I've read your answers on constipation, to augment magnesium and

vitamin C and more recently to Lynn here. This is my only concern on

this diet. I'm super constipated! Your statement about fiber rings

true to me because of the benefits I've gained from stopping fiber

foods, however...

I'm not just talking about constipation as in BM not happening more

than every third day. (When prior to this diet I would go 1 to 3 times

a day!) My biggest problem is when it does happen, it hurts!!! I would

have thought all the fats would make for a smooth " exit " but no! Often

the exit only happens half way! And I now always have blood on stool,

it's so painful!

I'm wondering if anyone else experiences the pain? There seems to be a

lot of us constipated on this diet. (I do eat vegetables).

Mentally, I'm happy about no longer eating grains, beans or nuts and

seeds. I'm thinner, no longer bloated like a buffalo and no longer

" crazy hungry " . Last week I added one to 2 apples a day (due that I'm

at 34% on the questionnaire...) But I'm seriously considering soaking

some brown rice or beans and having some. The pain this morning was

the worst ever.

At 34%, could the apples and/or rice or beans regress me?

Thanks Bee! Thanks for your patience repeating yourself!

Hugs,

Chris.

==>Could you be eating too much protein in relation to fats? And

maybe too low on fats? Do you use fitday.com to figure out your

ratios? You will get constipated if the ratios are not correct.

My constipation cure seems to be a consistent use of VSL#3. I used inulin for

several months, long enough to build up my healthy flora, but I still get

constipated if I don't take VSL#3 on a consistent basis. I swear by this

probiotic and it has done wonders for me. My candida is completely gone and I

credit the vsl for a large part of that. I take a half a packet per day.

It does seem to be. My DS is on Myrelax (sp). It is a powder. There

are several other children in his social skills therapy group that are

on it as well. He would go weeks before having a bowl movement

without. It his now 11 and has been on it for almost 3 years now.

My son was born constipated as well. He was 5 wks premature too and stayed in

the hopital an extra two weeks.

I kept taking him back to the doctor because he wouldn't do #2! and the doctor

was telling me to give him this or that, and you know, nothing he told me to do

ever worked. ever. I ended up having to give him an enema every other day until

he was 3. He is now 13, and if he don't eat the right foods he will get

constipated.

Maybe constipation is a first alert that something is different?

And I wondered.....was anyone elses' child a premature baby?

Hi Tanna

My dd was born 9 weeks early at 31 weeks gestation. She really doesn't have

constipation issues though. Unless we call attention to her doing #2, then she

will retain, so we don't call attention to it. She is still in diapers.

I too have wondered if her prematurity was a cause.
