Guest guest
Hi everyone----I have resubscribed for the digest version and have been reading it the last week--it helps so much to have a shorter version as I seem to have less and less time for email. Rose is doing very well, progressing with oral feedings and I believe she will be crawling in the next three months or so and she loves standing (not on her own yet!) but probably soon too. So far this winter season she has only had a cold and an ear infection and seems so be improving from that. OH also she is learning some signs--she recognizes several and tries to do them---it is exciting, she loves to be signed to. She is quite funny, has a good sense of humor and makes me laugh alot. We have some other news---we are going to have a baby in July----I am due around the 8th. So Kris, when I read your mail I was curious about what you did at the geneticists appointment and how it was determined that your baby would most likely be born without difficulities. I have just been mostly assuming that our chances of having another baby with CHARGE were not really any higher than the rest of the population. I have my first visit with our Obstetrician on Wednesday and plan to discuss all this with him, but any ideas and info would be appeciated. In the meantime congratulations to you Kris! Guest guest
Pushpa, I have talked to two genetic counselors one from the CHARGE Syndrome Institute, Meg Hefner and one from here where I am in Arizona. They both say the chances of having another CHARGE child is highly unlikely. It is less than 2% Very much less. But what I am going to be going through in the next few months are a few tests that can determine if the baby has any abnormalities. One is a blood test that they take when I will be 15 to 20 weeks, but not even this test is always accurate. They can tell, depending on the age of the mother, by the blood if the baby has a higher chance of having any chromosomal abnormalities. But remember CHARGE isn't a chromosomal abnormality. So CHARGE cannot be detected through this test. Just Down Syndrome, Neural Tube Defects and Trisomy 18. This test is called Maternal Serum Screening. The next is an amniocentesis test. They can do this test at anytime. This is where they take a needle and draw some of the amniotic fluid and test that. But mind you this one does not detect CHARGE either and this one also carries a higher risk of miscarriage, whereas the other do not carry any risk. The next test is a level 2 ultrasound and this one they have to do after you are 20 weeks along. This is just like a normal ultrasound but it is more enhanced, it has great details of the internal organs and facial features. This is the one that can and will most likely detected CHARGE if it is present and the defects are that severe, but with this test it is very possible to detect CHARGE. You should discuss these things with your doctor or your daughters doctor to find out if he or she feels it is necessary. I hope I have been of some help to you. Take care and if you need anything else please let me know. Hugs Kris - Mommy to (Austin - Aug 23, 1999 - Sept 22, 1999 CHARGE) - 16, ie - 14, - 13, new baby due in July
