Sorry for the repeat post if you also read the hpa-listserve.

Just curious of how different departments are set up for hospitals

with both Acute Care and Acute Rehab departments in the same hospital

(same physical space).

Our hospital has 224 beds total, 25 are for the acute rehab unit.

We have separate therapy departments, separate therapy managers,

separate staff and per diems.

Anyone have the 2 combined? or a different setup? Or any input on an

ideal setup?

Thanks

Our facility has 304 beds with a 23 bed inpatient rehab unit. I am the

Coordinator for both the inpatient rehab unit and the acute care rehab program.

Our acute care therapists share office space with the IRF therapists - this is a

change we have made in the past year. We expect the two groups to help each

other out with patient coverage (all of our therapists are crosstrained in both

acute care and IRF). Having them all the same office has helped them identify

when coverage is needed in each area and has taken some of the load off me to

find coverage when someone is out - they often work it out themselves. This way

everyone feels better about it!

We are a 175 bed acute care hospital with 23 designated rehab beds. We

have separate directors for the rehab unit and the physical medicine

departments but the therapy staff are all under the physical medicine

director. The rehab director handles the nursing unit aspects of the

rehab unit and the program decisions for the unit. The physical medicine

director handles the acute/OP aspects of the physical medicine department

and the therapy clinical aspects that arise on rehab. This allows us the

freedom to easier flex staff to where the patient census is highest (

often the acute census is high right before the patients shift to rehab

then as the rehab census increases the acute decreases) and to have fewer

issues with weekend staffing.
