Elaine,

There is a difference of mainstreaming, where the SED child works to the same

curriculum as the other students with modifications, and Inclusion where the

SED student works to their program within the regular ed program. I also

believe just because the concept of Inclusion is wonderful you have to check

things out to make sure it is an appropriate placement choice. You not only

have to look at the younger grades, but look at the entire system. Just

don't go by what people say, look at the classrooms and the how educators

and peers interact with the special needs students.

Patty went to a special school since she was 10 months old. By the time she

was in first grade we brought her back to district. The previous school had

her included 1/2 the day in a regular ed program. When we brought her back I

insisted Patty be in reg ed with a one on one, PT, OT, Speech... It was

wonderful. People couldn't have tried harder. I work with K-3 and as I have

seen, mobility seldom is an issue. Social issues are important, very

important to look at.

Patty is now in 10th grade and does wonderfully. I have to be honest though,

it has not been wonderful. As the child gets older the programs get more

curriculum based insead of child centered. As a parent you have to keep one

step ahead, all the time. That gets frustrating. You also have to try to

keep everything on positive levels-I mean with the staff and those servicing

your child. But you always have to do what is most appropriate for your

child, reguardless of peoples feelings.

What has made a difference in Patty's education, THE MOST EVER, is now we

have specialists outside of the district who understand CHARGE. They help

everyone!

Again, I do not believe there is one specific program for all children. You

have to check it all out. Go with what you believe is most appropriate for

your child, now and in the future.
