Guest guest
Sudafed dries up secretions and is not good at thining them. It is great for nasal congestion and runny noses but not good for those with thick mucous in the lungs from IPF. Guafinessin is a better product as it loosens and thins the mucous so it can be coughed up easier. It is also an over the counter product and Pulmonologist usually dont object to its use. NAC is short for N-Acetyl Cysteine. Most of us get it from Pilgrim's Pride when you can order 3 for the price of 2. I take 1 in the morning and 1 at night. Someone told me you need to take viatmain C with it so that it breaks down well enough for your body to absorb it ( like making sure you take Vitamin D with your calcium) I'm not sure if that is true or not but I take 200 mgs of Vit C with each Nac capsule just in case. There is a bunch of stuff online about it and my doctor said it couldn't hurt. Plus !!!! our website guru recommends it so I take it! He will probably fill you in on why we take it. linda zion <ljz741comcast (DOT) net> wrote: Sher, What is NAC? You mentioned it previously and I haven't been able to find info about it. Guest guest
Hi Carolyn: Thank you as I have been confused on this. I rerad my post and it was not that clear. He takes mucinex aslo for the lung congeston however his nose is so stuffed and we have tried everything you name it we have tried it I even make a salt/baking soda solution the helps temp. So to make a long story short right now he is on (for nasal cong) sudafed, saline, homemade rinse, flonaise and out of desperation just until it gets under control afrin which he hates as he knows about the rebound effect but he also needs to be able to breath. If his nose is blocked no 02 going in. He went to a ear, nose, throat spec and it was a waste of time all he did was look in his nose and said it is very dry and blamed the 02. Oh yeah he also uses ayr spray gel. Any suggestionsCarolyn Merritt wrote: Sudafed dries up secretions and is not good at thining them. Guest guest
For nasal congestion and to avoid the rebound use saline spray. Use one of his flonase bottles and go get some saline for contact lenses. Make sure though that it is only saline, no special cleaners added. Put it in the flonase bottle and spray away. It will loosen the congestion, is not addictive or cause rebound affect and you can use it as often as you want. I use it all the time. The saline rinse for contacts is the same saline used is the expensive bottles of nasal saline spray but is so much cheaper. I learned this in nursing school many years ago and it has always helped my nasal congestion Carolynl e wrote: Hi Carolyn: Thank you as I have been confused on this.
