Guest guest
For Holiday periods, I ask that they submit their requests for time off all at once (for Christmas and New Years the requests needed to be in by Oct 13). I use a simple form that shows who took what days off at Christmas time during the previous 3 years with the hope that they will be sympathetic to their peers and take turns. Having that info in front of me also makes it easier to make decisions. Now, when I get the requests, it is apparent that they have already worked most of it out on their own. Scheduling time off for PT, OT, and Speech always leaves someone disappointed. Is anyone working with a system for self-scheduling of time off that they could recommend? Guest guest
Hi Meredeth, Our system, which is partailly dictated by our union actually makes it pretty simple. All requests for time off for the entire year must be submitted by February 28 each year. Our supervisors then are required to coordinate with each other for cross coverage and allow the various requests. We then make the necessary arrangements for contract coverage well in advance. After that date, any additional time being requested can only be approved if there is adequate remaining staff or if the employee arranges their own coverage. Guest guest
Meredith, We have a master calendar in our lunch room. Only one person from any dept. can be off at a time--that's the policy. The policy also stipulates that you should check the calendar schedule before you request time off. Then you will most likely know what the answer is--and will not be disappointed. I tell everyone not to make any definite plans for travel until they have a signed time off request in their hands. I have had employees that really need some date off--negotiate with someone that already has it scheduled off to change their date before they come to see me. makes for much happier management and employees. Guest guest
At our 557 bed hospital, whether or not multiple therapists in the same discipline can take off depends a lot on our PRN availability on that given day. As the person that does the scheduling, I try to be flexible in this area. By being flexible, it's more work for me but I've found that it improves employee satisfaction at the same time. Hope this helps. Thanks, Curtis
Guest guest
For the major holidays we rotate every year. I have the therapists rate Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day with a 1, 2, or 3 priority. They are not allowed to request a #1 priority for the same holiday two years in a row, and I tell them they will not be scheduled to work the same holiday two years in a row. This works pretty well, without any complaints. As for regular time off requests, we are a fairly small department. I keep a " time off request calendar " and the therapists mark off their request in the calendar, which is confirmed when the schedule is posted. They work out on their own who takes time off when, because they can see when others have requested time. Hope this helps.
