Hi Tootiebess,

This is the defination for DIP:

Desquamative interstitial pneumonia is chronic lung inflammation that occurs in current or former cigarette smokers.

Although the word "pneumonia" is used, there is no evidence that an infection causes the inflammation. The condition affects cigarette smokers in their 30s and 40s, with most people developing breathlessness with even minimal exertion.

A chest x-ray shows less severe changes than in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and may show no changes in up to 10% of people. Pulmonary function tests show a decline in the amount of air contained in the lungs at the end of a person's strongest effort to breathe in (maximal inspiration). The amount of oxygen in a blood sample is low.

A lung biopsy is often needed to confirm the diagnosis and usually shows a distinctive pattern of diffuse and uniform lung inflammation. The most striking feature is the presence of numerous macrophages (cells that clear the alveoli of small inhaled particles and bacteria) within most of the smallest airways (bronchioles) and the alveoli.

About 70% of people who have desquamative interstitial pneumonia survive for 10 years or longer; the response is even better when the person stops smoking and takes corticosteroids.

I am sure that you know all this. Did you have lung biopsy? Whatever destruction that has taken place is irreversible but from what I understand from this article it can be controlled for awhile. I have PF secondary to Lupus. Different docs have assigned different names to it over the years but it all comes out to be pulmonary fibrosis. I will be ten years out from biopsy in April....if I make it. I have fought hard to stay alive. I have lots of reasons to live as I am sure that you do.

It gets depressing at times, frustrating, painful, scarey......that is why we are here. This group has been such a blessing to me. To find these wonderful people who are sick themselves, but take time from thier day to console and uplift others. You are welcome here.

Hugs, Joyce

tootiebess...First time I've heard about a "dip"...what does that mean?

Are you doing ok on the steroids?

Glad you found us, we are a great bunch and someone always has answers to questions.

I'm 68, dx last May. Mild stage and stable right now. Was on o2 with exertion but don't seem to need it now. Don't know why. I take NAC and that cleared up my coughing and spitting up junk.

I feel pretty good actually.

Hi everyone,

I have just joined this group. I am excited to find someone to talk to about this disease. I am a 53 year old, ex smoker, female, diagnosed almost a year ago. I was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis with a dip after it. I was told I was one of the lucky ones with this. My dr. said this dip meant I could live longer taking steroids.[the joy of my life] Just kidding about joy I hope u all know. Well here a year has gone by and I can't tell I am any better. I am down to 20 milligrams of steroids and I am still taking oxygen and don't have enough energy to wipe my butt.[just kidding] but it is very low. I would love to hear from some of you with this.

Hi Sher, Thank you for replying. DIP stands for D? interstiual pheumonia. The steroids have been horrible. I go up and down on them. Right now I am on 20 mgs. so I have a better mind. lol Those steroids have driven my family crazy. When I am on a high dose they don't know if I am going to cuss them or cry. Glad you are doing O.K. right now. God bless u.Sher K Bauman wrote: tootiebess...First time I've heard about a

Tootiebess,

Most all of us have been through Prednisone Hell. I have been on high doses for extended periods twice. I still take low doses. It is the best of drugs and the worst of drugs. I got so fat and so mean! Just tell your family and friends to hide any weapons and be alert!

Hi , It's and not Sher answering but the bottle is sitting in front of me and it's so hard to spell I thought I'd reply to you. NAC is short for N-Acetyl Cysteine. Most of us get it from Pilgrim's Pride when you can order 3 for the price of 2. I take 1 in the morning and 1 at night. Someone told me you need to take viatmain C with it so that it breaks down well enough for your body to absorb it ( like making sure you take Vitamin D with your calcium) I'm not sure if that is true or not but I take 200 mgs of Vit C with each Nac capsule just in case. There is a bunch of stuff online about it and my doctor said it couldn't hurt. Plus !!!! our website guru recommends it so I take it! He will probably fill you in on why we take it. linda zion wrote: Sher, What is NAC? You mentioned it previously and I haven't been able to find info about it. Hi P jumping in with some infro on NAC. It is a OTC (over the counter) as a pill. Prescription only as a inhaler I think. I have taken 3 @ 600mg/day for over a year and it has helped to lessen the mucus and my cough. http://erj.ersjournals.com/cgi/reprint/27/4/664 http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/518119 http://www.puritan.com/pages/file.asp?xs=03B293C4CFBA482798B5C7A7CE3CD82D & PID=324 & CPID=39 & np=1linda zion wrote: Sher, What is NAC? ...I read on an earlier post about this "dip". Goodness. All these conditions I didn't know even existed before this board!

I've never taken steroids and will be resistant if it is suggested. So many here on the board did or do have trouble with them.

Have a good one. Sher ipf 5-06

..NAC is N-Acetyl Cystine. It is a supplement that the majority of us here on the board get from www.puritan.com. Very inexpensive and is used for mucus. Dr. prescribed for most of us. This is just a good outlet. Most of us take 600 mg 3xdaily. Talk to your Dr.

When I was first dx (diagnosed) I coughed a lot and spit up mucus. Now I have none of either!

Hope this helps. No doubt will respond to you with one of the web sites he has 'up his sleeve'.

Have a good one. Sher ipf 5-06
