Hi,

I read you are concerned about giving your 12 week old son his vaccines.

This is a very controversial and delicate subject. We all want our

children to be safe, healthy and happy. The problem arises that we do not

know for sure exactly what, if any, relation the vaccines MAY have to

learning problems, health problems or possible autism. The decision to

vaccinate is one that must be carefully considered between you and your

health provider.

One of the main worries about SOME (not all) vaccines is that the

preservative, Thimerosol, is a mercury preparation. There is some

speculation that some people may not shed off the mercury as well as some

other people do. It is hypothesized that some people who do not rid

themselves of such toxins as Mercury preservative may in fact later show

signs of autism due to the buildup of mercury which is a neurotoxin. These

difficulties may manifest themselves as difficulty with eye contact,

language usage, social interaction or stimming. While there is a relatively

small amount of thimerosol in some vaccines, there is worry that the form

it takes in the body can be damaging/toxic and especially so if one can not

normally detoxify. Not all vaccines have thimerosol, but many do and flu

shots have had it as well as a number of other medical preparations.

A high percentage of children with autism in one study were shown to be

deficient in an important protein that allows detoxification. My

understanding is that further studies are underway to determine if this

study is valid and if it accurately reflects reality. Also, studies are

underway to determine ways to encourage that protein to become active and

work as it is supposed to do.

Thimerosol is being removed from vaccines due to concern by the medical

profession, but there are still vaccines out there in the physician's

offices that have it. You are well within your rights to ask that your

doctor provide the vaccine without thimerosol if you so wish. In the not

so distant future none of the vaccines will have it. Some people are also

asking that vaccines be given within a longer time frame. This means that

some people are opting to have their child vaccinated with longer intervals

in between shots and with fewer or only one vaccine being given on any

given day.

Still others are having their child vaccinated only when well and not when

taking other medications such as steroids or antibiotics.

In addition to the thimerosol issue, there are also some concerns by some

people that the vaccines can damage the digestive system even without the

preservative.

The link I have provided has some information from the Autism Research

Institute on the topic of vaccine safety. To me, reading up on the issue

allows me to make an informed choice. I know that many on the list may

believe it is inappropriate for me to post this information. I am truly

sorry if it bothers some people. I just feel it is so important for our

children for us to read and be aware of the issues and then to make

healthy, informed, educated choices with the information we have at the

time. I would be upset if somebody knew of these concerns but did not tell

me if I asked.

Your question is a very important one. Right now there is no one simple

answer. I am encouraged that the topic is being studied with the intent of

providing safety and health for all of our children. I hope that the

answers are clear soon.
