Guest guest
I seem to cough all the time and I can no longer eat regular food. I have to eat soups that I can drink in sips or eat in nibbles, if I try to eat anything else I cough so bad that it just isn't worth the hassle to eat at all. I can't even to go out to eat any more because of it. I cough 24/7 now and I am so tired from it. I can't sleep for coughing and nothing I do seems to help. I can't take cough medication with codeine because I am allergic to codeine and all of the OTC medications I have tried do not work. Please help me if you have any ideas. Another problem I have is my feet. The bottom of my feet feel like they are on fire at times and I don't know what to do about it. I don't know where to turn for answers since the doctors look at me like I just landed from Mars or some where like that. I have been to the Dermatologist and he has no answers either. This disease is driving me nuts. If anyone else has these problems please reply. Thanks to all. Hugs and Prayers! Guest guest
Have you been checked to see if you are aspirating your food when you eat? That is what it sounds like. I once had my vocal cords paralyzed after surgery on my neck and I could not eat any solids without coughing. I had to drink thickened liquids for 6 months till my vocal cords healed. If you are aspirating, coughing after eating is the major symptom. This is extremely serious as any food aspirated can cause Aspiration Pneumonia which can be deadly. As a nurse we always had to investigate any patients who experienced coughing when eating or right after eating. Guest guest
Barbara, My feet burn too. Especially at bedtime. I use peppermint lotions or some real cooling lotion. Temporary, but feels good. Also ibuprofin may help the inflamation. Docs will never give an answer for this. My friend has this so badly and the docs just blow it off. I think ours is connected to PF and less circulation to the extremeties. It can also be a symptom of diabetes. For the coughing....do you use a nebulizer? I use mine 4 times a day. I use Duoneb in it. It opens the airways and it has an ingredient 'ipratropium bromide' which relaxes the airways. I have used Advair and Pulmicort also. The doc was giving me Tussen Pearle (benzonatate) for coughing at night but decided at this stage he wouldn't do that anymore. So....I got my nightime dose of Muscinex with DM. It helps the nightime coughing. I gotta sleep sometime! I will cough the rest of the time and not complain. Hope this helps. No need in being so miserable. The least we can ask is to be somewhat comfortable. Good Grief! Hugs, Joyce PF 1997 Bronchiectasis 2004 INDIANA >> I seem to cough all the time and I can no longer eat regular food. Guest guest
Joyce, I am a diabetic but had not thought of the fact that the feet burning could be caused from that. I use Combivent inhalers and that doesn't work for me but I am going to call Mon and ask the doc to change it to something else and see if that will help. I think that sometimes they leave us on one thing so long that it quits working. I just want to sleep sometime and I am at the point that I am tired of fighting this battle and that is not like me to be ready to give up. Hugs and Prayers! Guest guest
I haven't been checked for aspirating my food but last year in March my doc had to go down my throat and try to clear out some stuff from my lungs and he couldn't get there because my esophagas was to narrow for him to put the tube down. I had forgotten about that until you mentioned the aspirating so when he is in his office on Mon I will call and ask him about this. Thank you for your input. Hugs and Prayers! Guest guest
Barbara, I had a significant increase in my coughing once my prednisone was lower than 40mg a day. The pulmonologist from Columbia Presbyterian in NY put me on Advair 250/50 to help with the cough. It took several weeks but I'd say it's reduced my cough about 50% which is a huge relief. The improvement seems to be lasting even though my prednisone is down to 20mg now and I expect it will be reduced further at my doctors visit on the 18th. You might also want to ask your doctor about a nebulizer. Like Joyce I use DuoNeb and it helps me bring up mucous and the cough then settles down for awhile. Hope that helps! Guest guest
Hi Barbara, I have had the burning feet for about three years. I also have very red burning hands. My Dr. thinks it may be vascular. All I know is every night I am feeling around for a new cool spot on the sheets for my feet. I refuse to go to any more specialists ( for now ) All I want is one day without the tube up my nose and do my own cleaning, cooking and shopping.. Well to fit back into a 14 would be Wonderful. Back to the feet. I go outside at night and walk the porch to cool my feet. 22 degrees feels wonderful on the bottoms..lol.. This disease is only for the strong and those with fight and mainly Faith. So you hang in there and we'll all be there to stand by you. God Bless Love and Prayers, Peggy 9/04 ipf Florida I seem to cough all the time and I can no longer eat regular food. Guest guest
Barbara...I'm soooo sorry to hear of your additional problems! Damn. Seems we get such overload. Have you by chance seen a Gastroenterologist? The swallowing COULD BE related to reflux. The feet, I don't know. See a Podiatrist maybe? Hope you have insurance! I do know how you feel. Seems like I deal with one thing then another thing until I stop dealing and don't take good care of myself. I feel like a chronic complainer! I'm not! Guest guest
Barbara, I want to reply about your coughing. Boy do I remember when all I did was cough. I could not eat, talk, dress, anything. I would cough so hard that I would throw up and even faint. We tried every cough medecine in the drug store. I didnt sleep because I would cough the worst when I reclined. It was terrible. Finally got some relief. The pulmo. had me turn my o2 up a couple of numbers, dgave me a valiuim to relax my muscles and soon my coughing decreased. I still have terrible time of coughing at night and if I talk too much but it is so much better. Found out that I could breathe better too. Because the valium had side effects for me, it was switched to XANAX which is a situational drug. So, I only take it when needed. Anyway, sorry you are coughing so much. Been there...I know the distress. Hope you get some relief. Re: Have a question for anyone that may have this problem. Joy it seems like I am coughing no matter what I am doing. Guest guest
, My doc has wanted to put me on Valium for sometime now because of the muscle spasms that I have in my chest at times. It feels like someone is putting their fist in my chest and trying to pull the muscles out and boy does it hurt. I guess maybe now would be a good time to say ok if it will help with the coughing. I don't know how much longer I can take this. It is really about to get the best of me, but with Gods grace and mercy I have made it through another day. He has been so good to me and I give Him praise and glory for each day that I am able to get out of bed. He alone knows when He will choose to take me out of this world and take me home to be with Him and I am looking forward to that time, I just pray that my children are ready for it when the time comes. My husband isn't and I don't think he will ever be ready. Thank you for your advise and for caring. Guest guest
Hey Sher, I had my daughter pick me up some of the lotion you mentioned in an email I got earlier and it sure smells good. Guest guest
Martha, Thanks for your input. I have been off of the pred for a while and I have a dry cough with nothing to come up but I do plan on calling my doc on Mon and asking him some questions. I have coughed for almost 5 years but not this bad. This only started about a month ago, right after I saw him the last time and it just doesn't seem to be getting any better. Thanks again for being there. Hugs and Prayers! Barbara R IPF 1/2203>> Barbara,> > I had a significant increase in my coughing once my prednisone was lower than 40mg a day. The pulmonologist from Columbia Presbyterian in NY put me on Advair 250/50 to help with the cough. It took several weeks but I'd say it's reduced my cough about 50% which is a huge relief. The improvement seems to be lasting even though my prednisone is down to 20mg now and I expect it will be reduced further at my doctors visit on the 18th.> > You might also want to ask your doctor about a nebulizer. Like Joyce I use DuoNeb and it helps me bring up mucous and the cough then settles down for awhile.> > Hope that helps!> > Beth Fibrotic NSIP 06/06> > Don't try to explain it, just nod your head.> Breathe in, breathe out. Guest guest
Barbara, RE: grand daughter calls me old woman all the time My older grandkids do that too. I am also 62. My spirit doesn't feel 62 (some days I am 12 and some days 35..but never 62) They think it bothers me and that it is funny! The boys 16 and 17 call me 'Oldie Hawn'. Aren't grandkids wonderful?
