His thyroid gland was " killed " with the radioactive treatment commonly used in such cases, but he has had subsequent afib attacks, probably because " killing " the thyroid gland by radiation does not necessarily provide insurance against a too high thyroid level. I remember reading that in February of " 99 (I think it was) he was hospitalized with afib while visiting his son in Florida. At that time the reports said that he was given Procainimide to convert to sinus while in the hospital.
