Guest guest
Hi Charlie & Everyone: We have a pretty thorough link on our Database provided by the Cardiovascular Center of Milton S. Hershey Center, Penn State which addresses the Electrophysiology (EP) Study. Click here; then click on *Basic Information*; then scroll down about two or three topics. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AFIBsupport/links There's lots of other interesting stuff there also which might be of interest to you - and possibly to our other new members. Guest guest
Hi Charlie, welcome to the Fib board. Firstly I am in England and my terminology may not be the same as yours. An EP is a cardiologist who specialises in Arrhythmia, This is the science of electrical disturbances of the Heart. Eps are also specialists in the Catheter a instrument that can be described as like a piece of fibre Optical that can be placed in the Heart looking for the parts that can cause problems. For more details on this please have a look at www.Cardima.com I do not encourage or Discourage the Cardima Methods but there web site gives a good idea of what Afib is and all about the catheter. EP tests. Most patients that are new to AF will be put through the following tests. Stress tests Walking on a moving rollers at various speeds. This test identify if there is any blockages in the veins. Angiograms , I believe this is called Catherization in the USA. this where a Catheter is placed in the heart looking for any Blocked Arteries There is also the Echocardiogram An ultrasound device that's looks at the function of the Valves. All the above tests can be performed by a Cardiologist. If all the above test are negative then this is deemed as Lone AF, nothing found in what is causing your AF. At this time and if your not Happy with your AF treatment then I would suggest this is a good point in locating and being refereed to an EP. I can only speak from experience here in the UK, but meeting with an EP its is a breath of fresh air. They seem to know all the problems that you complain about and are more understanding about this condition. You may be lucky and have a EP study. This is the same as an angiogramme but this time the EP is looking at the wiring of the heart seeing if they can find the Short circuit that is causing the problems. Here are two good sites that may help you locate an EP here in the UK are in the USA. http://www.naspe.org/find_heart_rhythm_specialist/ http://www.heart.org.uk/bpeg.nsf Good luck and Happy new year.
