Guest guest Posted January 31, 2001 Report Share Posted January 31, 2001 Lynda, It's my guess that Austin is just not ready. I've gone through the same thing with Neal. The only difference is that Neal was born without an anus, so had to have a sphincter muscle MADE in surgery (nobody makes it quite the same way that God does - so we still have problems). One of our pediatric surgeons suggested that I begin bowel training, which is different from potty training. Takes a little more time and effort though. It has become our routine now that Neal sits on the potty every morning for half an hour or however long it takes for him to " show me the poop. " Sounds barbaric, I know - to make this easier for him, I bought a TV/VCR combo and put it in the bathroom, so he can watch Blue's Clues while he poops. I also have a little table in there so that he can eat his breakfast while he sits there (the food helps to stimulate action, as you know). I have books in a little basket, and a lamp instead of the overhead light, just to keep it kinda' calm in there. It took a little getting used to, but now it has become our routine. Now, that's how I've approached it being the parent of a child with special needs. Another approach I took, as plain old parent, regarding wet/dirty pants, was to look at him like I was disgusted and insist that he clean himself up. I read somewhere that children are slow to become potty-trained sometimes because it means that they get at least a few minutes of undivided attention from their parents everytime they have to be changed. I make Neal do it himself. If he refuses to do it, I just let him run around wet/dirty until he gives in and changes himself. In the meantime, I don't let him sit on the furniture or anything, and I frequently tell him, " you stink! " He looks at me all confused, as if to say, " why aren't you doing something about it, " so I have to remind him that it's his problem, not mine. It's maddening, I know, but try to stay calm. Good luck with all that! Are the kids in his preschool potty-trained? Rather than doing another year of preschool, I went ahead and sent Neal to kindergarten and have decided to let him repeat that instead. After a year in the Kindergarten environment, he is finally realizing what is expected of him, and he's already starting to do much better. One more year will only give him that much more time to catch up. But I think it is six of one, half dozen of the other. Again, good luck - hope this helps some. No help from ped. uroligist said, remember he is delayed about a year. Well, we had him in pull-ups, and he used them as a crutch, even though he could do it, he would wait until nap time when I put a pullup on him to poop--everyday. so, we said no more pullups except at night. I also made him clean himself, pee, and redress himself. it helped. as far as school, he has a late Aug. b-day, and very inmature--I taught 1st grade and would have kept him back had he been --I hate this word--Normal. So his first two years were handicapped pre-k the second year he went part time to reg. ed. pre-k, and this year is reg, pre-k with support. next year will be reg. k with support. it is a herd decision, but you knoiw your child best, go with your gut feeling. and good luck with the potty training--we also do books in the potty--he has it mastered, now I'm struggling with my almost 3 yr. old who can do it, but has a mind of his own. maria, mom to timmy 5 charger, keegan 3 on 3/20 and liam 3 months Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

She would be. She just will do it when she wants and won't when she doesn't. She will go at home while in panties or naked but I would never dream of taking her anywhere without a diaper. I send her to school in a Pull-up. I think she will let me know. I am not a big advocate on potty training. I NEVER, not for a day potty trained my son ,he came up to me one day and said,"Mommy, I don't want to wear diapers." I said okay and that was that. No accidents even at night. I am wondering has anyone keep their kids in preschool an extra year. He is deaf and in Total communication preschool. I am just thinking he needs another year of language, self help skills to prepare him for the academics of kindergarten. Teachers keep telling to remember the Individual Education Plan. Anyone have any feelings on this? We went to the Minneapolis workshop and are really excited that now ,finally we are able to get involved, we can't wait until July. This may sound crazy, but we used dixie cups for him to urinate in at home. He liked to peepee in the cup, then when he was staying dry, we let him empty the cups in the toliet. It seemed to be the breaking point. After that, everything went great!!!! My daughter, Kriste, was held back in first grade. She was in a deaf classroom for oral students. We repeated first grade in the public school system. That way, she had a head start on what to expect with academics and it made a easy transition from a deaf class to complete oral class. I would do it again if the situation presented itself. They can learn with you and the kids will enjoy the interaction with the other kids. Grandma and Grandpa will still get to have the kids at meal time and evenings. Will also give you a chance to get out of your room after sessions to talk more with the other parents while they watch the little ones. I went to Boston and we both went to Houston. My twins boys (chargers) age 5 are having a terrible time potty training! They will pee in the potty but, are wet in-between and don't seem to have any idea or care that they are wet or dirty. When I ask where is the pee or poop supposed to go they tell me appropriately but, they can't tell me when they have to go. We have tried pecs cards and signing to help with little success. It is really frustrating and we have been in pull-ups for a while now and at times try underwear. Doctors just say be patient -- they are just as annoying! Any ideas? Part of the problem is he is still on a liquid diet. I think part of the problem is also a lack of total physical control. In fact, I think the last is the biggest problem. I can see the same thing with my 3 year old, who is dry most of the time, but can get involved in activities and then suddenly realizes he needs to to potty but gets there too late. He will get it, though. For the control problem is probably muscular, but may also be neurological. I don't know. I think will get there, though, as he is doing better. There were many factors that finally came together that made it work better. For us signing and using PECS cards was a help, but not enough help until Kendra had better awareness of her body and better use of the sphincter muscles used for toileting. She could hold the urine allllll day but not be able to release when it was the right time on the toilet. One thing that helped significantly was exercises from the HANDLE Institute. Judith Bluestone of the HANDLE Institute will be presenting in Indy for the conference. The exercises she recommended for Kendra strengthened the sphincters all through Kendra's body. Judith explained that by strengthening one sphincter you can affect other sphincters in the body. The exercise that helped Kendra just involved sucking water through a straw each day. The mouth sphincters became stronger, but amazingly the sphincters used for toileting became stronger also. Kendra became much more aware of how to pee when it was time. After one month of the exercises Kendra could use the toilet when necessary. We still use PECS and signing, but she has not worn diapers during the day since we did Judith's exercises almost 4 years ago. She has had maybe 3 times in those 4 years when she didn't get to the toilet in time. Prior to that time she had never used the toilet consistently at home. Other things that have helped have been increasing Kendra's sense of proprioception by other exercises recommended by HANDLE and by sensory integration therapy and osteopathic manipulation. All of these things have been helpful in the toileting issue but also in Kendra's general development. I put water in Squeaker one day - or several days, I don't remember - caught her attention, and had him pee in the toilet. She loved it-and clearly understood what I had in mind. The main thing here is that we had to be inventive - and still do. The rule of thumb is always does she understand. If things still aren't going well, with any thing, I always ask myself how I can explain things more clearly for her. Often this isn't just a case of signing (in our situation) but rather of dreaming up another Squeaker. I know all of our kids are different, but I still think that we need to ask ourselves what our kids understand when we're asking something of them. It can be really hard. Unfortunately is one of the lowest functioning children with CHARGE that I have seen. He understands a few signs and actually uses about three. As he takes nothing by mouth food or drink is not a reinforcer. But he does know what the potty is for. It's just that sometimes he sits for 15 minutes and does nothing, and a few minutes later is wet. He is at the point where he does not like to be wet, and so we sometimes find him lying or walking around naked, and find his pull up is wet. He just can't so far make the connection of putting himself on the potty when he needs to go. I'm not sure if he knows ahead of time that he needs to go. Always a challenge, but we are making progress. This is my first time writing and I will tell you what has seemed to work for me as far as pottytraining my amost 4 year old son, Wyatt (charger). I actually read about it in Child magazine. We have a posterboard on the door to the bathroom and when Wyatt goes potty in the toilet, he gets one sticker to put on the board, and if he goes " #2 " he gets 2 stickers. He can't wait to get another sticker, so it makes him more conscious of when to go. He uses sign language, so fortunately, communication isn't a problem.
