Guest guest
Hi Suzanne:Thanks a lot for the valuable info - I really appreciate it. Quick question - did your son have any history of seizures, prior to taking bethanechol? Or did bethanechol result in him having seizures after he started taking it? My daughter is normally very hyper and with bethanechol, we noticed that her hyperactivity reduced (which is a good thing from our perspective but can be considered scary, since you mentioned that your son got quieter and quieter). We would like to know if bethanechol worsened his existing condition or if it introduced the seizures for the first time. Regards, Shilpa. Subject: Re: BethanecholTo: mb12 valtrex Date: Tuesday, May 12, 2009, 5:00 PM Bethanechol can lower the seizure threshold. It was bad news for my son. He got quieter and quieter as the weeks passed, and eventually had noticable seizures (he was probably having them at night all along). We got him into the hospital and our then-DAN doctor told us about the seizure risk and we stopped it. He got slowly better, though we found out later on that he was still having them at night and started an anticonvulsant. That was when he really started to improve. If you're seeing language loss or other regression, I would stop immediately and seek the help of a neurologist. good luck to you. Guest guest
It's hard to know if my son was having seizures before. His ABA school had said they thought they'd seen some absence episodes but never caught them long enough to tell. Most ASD kids have their seizures at night, and if what they're having is just subcortical abnormalities or epileptiform abnormalities, they may never show up as seizures. Or they may show up as mood or anger problems or something else just odd and nobody suspects a seizure. We believe my son was having them at night all along, and the bethanechol caused them to be progressively more severe and to break through to daytime.
