Hello there:

I am writing to ask if anybody has experienced adverse reactions to

antihistamines with their CHARGE kids. I have a little guy (he will be

3 in September) with CHARGE who has frequent ear infections/fluid in

the ear. So we have been treating it with this and that antibiotic. He

has a unilateral hearing loss (profound) in his left ear. We think it

is probably completely a neural hearing loss because he has other

cranial nerve issues. (facial palsy, left side vocal cord paralysis,

and most likely the 8th cranial nerve (hearing) is damaged/partial. He

had a strange reaction to Benadryl several months ago (completely

flipped out, became agitated and uncontrollable). Well, just last night

we started him on Zyrtec (antihistamine) that is not supposed to cause

drowsiness. We started this because of the fluid in his ears

(uninfected) and also because he seems to have a problem with his nose.

It seems to cause him pain sometimes (makes me wonder if it is nerve

related). He starts hitting or rubbing it and crying. This happens

anywhere from once a day to five times a day. So, we gave him Zyrtec

and this morning when he got up he was so groggy, glass eyed, unstable

it was scary. I took him to a two hour summer camp and he could hardly

hold his head up and fell over while sitting down. This was more than

12 hours after giving him the drug. This lasted until early afternoon.

He is finally back to normal but wow, that was pretty scary. Anybody

else have a bad experience with giving their kids antihistamines? Any

other suggestions for his nose problem/fluid in his ears? I am really

considering getting tubes for him to eliminate the medication and

hearing problems (due to fluid). Hope to see many of you in Indy next

week.

Tammee (Bradley and Aubrey's mom)
