Lynn,

No to the intestinal problems. However, I do swallow a lot of air by gasping. I am burping (very discreetly and ladylike, thank you). I read that people with breathing problems such as asthma swallow a lot of air and burp.

So.....you need to use the CPAP machine. If you stop breathing in the night with limited lung capacity, you may not restart. I hope you can get help from a therapist so that is possible. It surely sounds like it could be the culprit.

Been missing you and wondering where you had gone. Sorry you were feeling so miserable.

Hi LynnA, Do you have a humidifier attached to your cpap? I had some of the same things until we added the humidifier. I also take pain meds and go the laxative/stool softner route. Dr put me on SennecotS. I had to up the dosage to 3 per nite but it works for me. armede wrote: Hello everyone. I hope all are having

Lynn;

My experience with the cpap machine was identical to yours. For me a hiatal hernia allowed the air into my stomach. When I went for the follow up the drs. told me to stop using the machine. Now I just do the best that I can to get sleep. I've found that a shot of Nyquil or asimilar drug helps me get some sleep.

CPAP and gas & constipation question please

Hello everyone. I hope all are having a wonderful Holiday Season. I'm still unpacking, getting acclimated to snowy Seattle after 6 years in California. Also dealing with a lot of the same family issues as it sounds like so many of you are.

I noticed that there are quite a few of us with sleep apnea. I just had a terrible bought with constipation and brutal gas in my stomach and bowels. A lot of it is the pain meds I take for the costochondritis and fibromyalgia, but I'm beginning to suspect my CPAP machine as also being a part of the problem. In October I had another monitored sleep with the overnight o2 meter. It turned out my machine was way too low for me. My stats went down in to the low 80's a few times, an average of 90. I stopped breathing 98 times. So they adjusted my machine from a 7 to a 9.

Immediately I started noticing terrible gas in my stomach (and making its way out - loudly ). The stomach cramps escalated and - so did my constipation!!! I usually have a breakfast smoothie with pears, a 1/2 a banana, apples, prune and cherry juice, flax seed and aloe vera. I eat a fair amount of living foods and take stool softeners. Last week, though, I was so impacted & dehydrated, I ended up in the ER. I have never been in so much pain in my life!!! And in front of 4 of the handsomest firemen in Seattle!

I was given pain meds, xrayed and scanned and they found a lot of "back-up" in me. Sorry this is so long. That night I didnt use my CPAP because I couldnt take anymore stomach pain. I'm starting to wonder if the CPAP is forcing enough air into me to dry me and my stool out enough to constipate me and cause the severe dehydration? Hi Joyce, Since we are all discussing unladylike subjects this week, I thought I'd ask my embarassing question. What about snorting? I suddenly snort each time I laugh and sometimes in the middle of sleep I snort so loud I wake myself up Good thing I sleep alone because between the burping and snorting I'm not too romantic sounding! No snorting here. (At least not yet...) But I do do this weird little gaspy thing that sort of sounds like a hiccup. It comes and goes, I've noticed it more again since they're reducing the prednisone. All the weird noises that come out of us....isn't it lovely!

Armede...you poor thing! What a ghastly experience. I haven't experienced what you describe with my cpap but I'm on a "10" flow. I have been in ER with impaction and that, girlfriend, is indeed, the worst pain I've ever had yet.

Try eating a couple of Metamucil wafers with a glass of liquid before bedtime....works like a charm!!!

Sorry to hear so many of you seem to be not feeling quite so well. You are all in my prayers. I'm through with the colostomy, have had lunch, and am relaxing. Today was the easy part. You just go to sleep and when you wake up you can eat and drink again. My results were normal which is good news. I wasn't really concerned just finally gave in to my Drs. insistence that I should have one. am 66 and managed to postpone it for 16 years. Yesterday eve I'd just as soon forget. The "input" was worse than the "output". I thought I never would finish drinking a half gallon of yucky liquid. I saw my pulmo this week, too and things seem to be stable now which is also good news. Also saw my psychologist this week so now hopefully I am through with Drs. for awhile and will enjoy getting ready for Christmas I This evening I am going to decorate the tree as I feel like it and just relax. Glola,

I am so glad that your colonoscopy is over. I have never had one. I have always dreaded the thought. I am a big chicken about some things....and that is one.

I have one more doc appointment before Christmas. Hate to go sit in a waiting room when I could be shopping or wrapping gifts.

Enjoy your Christmas tree!

Hi Joyce , thank you for the welcome back. I've missed you too. Thank you for not forgetting about me. The last 2 - 3 years have been the most difficult period I've been though for a long time. I can't remember ever having as distressing a time as this in my life since my late 20's. Since I got out into the world and found out that not only don't know everything, but am basically "clueless". LOL!!!!

As I'm sure everybody can relate, being as sick as I have been over the last three years has devastated my life. I guess I should feel re-assured because at least now I finally have a name to attach to the wretched way I have been feeling.

Yes, I'll keep using the CPAP machine. It was recently re-set after a recent sleep test. Probably not as bad as some, but worse than others - stopped breathing 90 some times during the night and had o2 stats in the low 80's.

Not using the CPAP is not an option for me. I love the way you describe your description of "discrete & ladylike burping". *smile* I start passing gas as fast as 20 minutes after putting on the machine. I know the forced air must be dehydrating me also.

I saw some CPAP websites earlier. Message boards. I'll have to post the issue there to see if anyone else has had similar issues. I will also call Apria in the morning to find out how to turn it down a "ramp".

I don't have access to a therapist at the moment. I'm in kind of a scary bind. I don't have medical coverage at the moment. I knew that was coming and have been rationing my o2 tanks. I still have the concentrator, am just tethered to the house these days. I know it will work out and I'll get coverage soon. I had a dear friend for dinner whose Husband is a medical advocate. She was the one who first told me about the services that are available to me. She also has been sweet enough to recognise that I need help with things like dealing with forms. Something that is particularly devastating to me considering I used to be an intake person. This disease sure is humbling.

Good one . Here's another "snorter" for you. What is that about? I never snorted in my life! Now, I sound like a hyena. I might as well throw away all attempt as modesty these days. LOL!!!

Hi ! How are you? Hope you are slipping to winter gently. No, I don't have a humidifier. I was suppost to have gotten a RX for one and didnt have the energy to follow up on why I never received it. I MUST make sure and do my fruit smoothies every a.m. Prune juice, unsweetened cherry juice and what ever fruit I have available - even apples and pears and blend with a little aloe vera juice. I take a softener. Someone told me about sennicot. I'll have to check it out when I get back on some kind of medical coverage. Thank you.

I think I'm going to have to cut the bread out completely dang it. I love bread, soft bread, hard bread, buttered bread , flat bread, pocket bread, sweet bread, savory!!!!

Thanks Sher, I'll give the metamucial a try. Wow, 10!! That was one ER visit I could have done without!!! It would not stop!!! I think that was one of the things that scared me the most. The realization that there was absolutely nothing I could do to stop the pain. Wow! I didn't realize how much I liked being addressed by Armede until you just did it. Thanks

Glo, I'm so glad the test came back normal. That must have been nerve wracking, waiting on that one.

Welllll, actually, the "Armede" was a goof. If you like it better, I'll remember!

The '10' flow I'm on is on the humidifier. I take it you don't have one. I think '10' is pretty normal.

Do try the Metamucil WAFERS. It sure works well and they taste like cookies...I take two.

Be good to you. Sher ipf 5-06
