German Measles is commonly also by two other names. Rubella and " 3 days measles " . I guess it just depends on your location. When rubella " GM " occurs in a pregnant woman, it may cause congenital rubella syndrome with serious malformations of her developing fetus. Children infected with rubella before birth(a condition known as congenital rubella) are at risk for the following: growth retardation; malformations of the heart, eyes, or brain; deafness; and liver, spleen, and bone marrow problems. While I was pregnant with Caitlin the dr. told me that my blood tests showed that I was not vaccinated for Rubella. Although as far as I know every child must receive that vaccination to attend school. My shot record showed that I had received the vaccination..figure that one out..LOL. This is verging quite off topic, but as I understand it the blood test that done in early pregnancy is to determine how much " resistance " to Rubella you have. Altho' you may have been vaccinated for it as a child, your body either may not have developed full resistance to it or it's resistance may have worn off (this explanation isn't very accurate, but I think it's kind of close). So, at that point the blood test revealed that you just didn't have full resistance (and thus should be very careful of exposure). Sometimes when the vaccinations are manufactured, a particular " lot " may not have full strength. Also, sometimes, for various reasons, one person's body doesn't develop full resistance to a disease from a vaccination that gives full resistance to most other people. It's not an exact science (but what in medicine is?). There's alot about vaccinations on the web. Why it's more commonly called German Measles is beyond me, it's just the way it's always been for decades. Rubella (German measles) and measles are 2 different illnesses. It was a German researcher that found it was a separate virus so they named it after him. Also, someone mentioned liver, spleen and bone marrow problems...I have never heard of a case of a child with Congenital Rubella Syndrome with those added characteristics. Just out of curiosity and not thinking it means anything, but was anyone else tested for Rubella Antibodies before or during their pregnancy? Guest guest Posted August 22, 2001 Report Share Posted August 22, 2001 Anne, I had several titer tests done when I was pregnant with Jillian because they thought had Fifth disease, scarlet fever, etc..when I was pregnant. He was in and out of the ER seeing an infectious disease specialist for 3 weeks. he ended up having s Syndrome which " masks " Kawasaki so I went through the titers to see if i had the antibodies. So did my best friend who was also pregnant at the same time.
