-- MS vs. Idiots...

I have a brother who is so stupid. Really, you can't explain anything to him. Of course, I blame most of that on the fact that he's an alcoholic. The only people he understands is, Bud Weiser and Jim Beam. (His two favorite friends)

When I went to go stay with my daughter, I ran across my brother. He could see that I was having some problems (physically). He said to me, "Val, why don't you just exercise more? Have you tried walking? How about losing some weight? That's probably all you need to do to live with the MS.".

You don't know how that just went through me. I told him, sarcastically, "You know, I never thought about that. Wow, if that's all it took to cure an incurable disease, I would have been doing that all along! I wonder why the medial field hasn't thought of that?" Then, I went on to say, "You know, maybe you should walk more. Maybe you'd stop drinking!"

I'm not going to try to educate him. It's not worth my time. He's a grown man. He has a computer. If he really cared and wanted to know, he'd do the research. (I'm not going to hold my breath).

God bless....Val

Unlike your brother, I think most people mean well when they make unintentionally hurtful, irrational comments & suggestions. And, it is very hard not to lose my temper responding to such comments.

Trying to convey the concept of fatigue to most people is just sooooo difficult. My friend will reply "I get tired, too. We all get tired." He just doesn't get it.

As I've wondered on a previous occasion, would these same ignorant persons say the same sort of thing to Reeve seeing him in a wheelchair? "Chris. Get up and walk around. Then, you won't need the wheelchair." I honestly wonder.... :)

Dana~

When it comes to most people, I just let it slide. Because, I don't have to deal with most people. With family however, I think it's just down-right disrespectful of them to take an ALL-KNOWING attitude towards my disease, without finding out the facts.

I've tried to explain to them what MS is. I've even given them literature on the subject. No one cares. Even my daughter, when I received some information on Avonex, I tried to give her some literature on it. She barely glanced at it and put it down. I know she didn't intend on reading it because she laid it down with the rest of the information that I had been going through.

Oh Well. I'm cool with it. There will come a day when they will wish they had taken the time to learn more about what I've been going through the past 20+ years. It's unfortunate that I won't be around then.

God bless...Valene

I'm working on my husband now. He's one of those people who actually has to hear it from other people before he'll believe what I tell him. (That's the way I feel anyway). I've been trying to tell him for years now how the heat bothers me so much. For the last eight years, the household temp. has been a real battle. Then, yesterday he comes home and tells me about some man on the radio talking about MS and the weather. Now, all of a sudden, it's..."Honey, are you cool enough?", "Honey, is it too warm in here for you?"

Hmmm. It must not be true, unless some unknown person says it is.

Blessed be...Valene

I know y'all know I'm a new agey wierdo...that said, for my 30th birthday I was given a gift...of going to a Shirley McLaine seminar...(ok, stop laughing!!)

When the lady that did the intro was talking she said...

You all know what it is like to hear "you don't REALLY believe that? Do you?" Well, here you won't hear that!

Same as here, we ALL hear negative things about our condition, things that other people have heard or believe, but WE don't talk like that among each other...we all KNOW to one degree or another what we're going through...and we all have caring for each other and a lot of love to pass around...

BTW today is my one year anniversary of being on LDN

Good point. "Just get up Chris. You're just enjoying the attention". lol I SO enjoy the attention I get when I hobble into the store, find an electric cart and get all the "admiring" glances throughout the store. I heard a man say once that he had been to Walmart and had a hard time getting through the store because the aisles were full of fat, lazy people on electric scooters. Lovely, eh?Sharon Re:

I mentioned LDN to my new neuro. And you should have seen the look on his face. It was like..."Who's been filling your head with such nonsense!" Little does he know...That's not going to be the last time he hears it come out of my mouth.

Val,good for you! And your right. If he would look it up he would know that if

thats all it took we would all be cured, not to mention the fact that most of us

with disabilitys dont have an easy time working out.It sucks when the people

that say the stupid things are our own family. So howd he like it when you said

maybe if he walked more he wouldnt drink?lol.Hopefully that stopped him dead in

his tracks,or at least maybe he thought about it later.I have had people, family

too tell me the same thing.I always say yea sure just as soon as im abled enough

to exercise ill get right on it.lol.lol.Besides its always good to have a lil

extra cusion in case we fall or bump ourselves. At least in my opinion,or I

should say experience.lol...hugz,cassy

Val, when I asked my neuro, He held up his hand (like stop right there) he said he couldn't believe I would even say that in his office to him. LOL he is no longer my neuro, I told him it was my DX' and as long as I was able to think for myself I would be in charge not him or any other doc... I really think he has a "GOD" complex you know he thinks he is GOD. But my reg said no problem can't hurt and wrote out the script right then..... Have you asked your reg doc yet??? Laughingly,
